Horspath's revival hits the buffers

28 Jul 2026

Horspath's recent resurgence in Home Counties Premier Cricket League Division 2 ended with an eight-wicket defeat at Datchet.

Following back-to-back wins over Ickenham and Wargrave, hopes were high that the side could maintain the momentum at the Wally Gage Memorial Ground.

But despite several batsmen making starts after the visitors elected to make first use of the pitch, no-one was able to contribute a significant score and the side were 163 all out with Leo Fountain (5-43) the chief destroyer.

Sravan Konidena and Tom Nichols got Horspath off to a good start with 56 for the first wicket.

However, Nichols (20) was then bowled by Fountain, who struck again with Konidena caught by Tom Bevan for 34 to make it 71-2.

With David Scott (3-46) also making his mark, three wickets fell for just one run as Horspath slumped to 83-5.

Viv Narayan and captain Amin Rafiq saw the side to lunch without further loss at 101-5 but Datchet tightened their grip after the interval.

The skipper had moved on to 18 when he was caught behind by Samand Khan to give Scott his third victim, before Narayan was bowled by Fountain for 32.

With Julius Sumerauer (2-28) returning to take the final two wickets, Horspath were all out inside 46 overs.

Konidena lifted the visitors early on in Datchet's innings by having Bevan caught by Liam Turnbull to make it 16-1.

But then opener Jack Laraman and Joshua Jayasingh shared a stand of 87 for the second wicket to put the hosts on track.

They took the Berkshire club to tea at 92-1 and Laraman completed his half-century after the resumption, before Amin had Jayasingh caught and bowled for 31 to make it 103-2.

But there was to be no further joy for the visitors as Laraman, who finished unbeaten on 81 off 107 balls with nine fours and a six, and Scott (30no) added the 61 runs required to seal their fate.

The loss sees Horspath drop two places to seventh ahead of Saturday's home game against Gerrards Cross, who lost to Wargrave by 96 runs.
