Battling Horspath hold out in late show

22 Jun 2026

Horspath showed their battling qualities to secure a draw against Chesham in what is believed to be the latest finish to a Home Counties Premier League Division 2 match at the Recreation Ground.

The clock had just ticked over to 8.55pm when play finally ended in the rain-affected encounter, which had begun more than nine hours earlier at 11.30am.

Umayanga Suwaris hit a brilliant unbeaten 134 off 99 balls as the Bucks club posted 291 all out after they had chosen to bat with Viv Narayan claiming his first Home Counties five-wicket haul.

The Sri Lankan batsman turned round an innings - which was reduced to 49 overs due to three rain breaks - after Chesham had been 50-4 at lunch.

Horspath were up against it at 172-8 when Derval Green was out for a sparkling 61.

But then Asad Rafiq (45no) and Liam Turnbull (33no) played with great positivity in a Home Counties club record unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 84 to see the hosts to the close at 256-8.

Sravan Konidena (4-63) claimed three victims in a fine opening spell for Horspath to put the visitors in trouble when rain brought an early lunch.

But captain Daniel Ward was then joined by Suwaris and they proceeded to rebuild the Chesham innings with some aggressive strokeplay.

The pair both completed half-centuries, adding 110 for the fifth wicket before Konidena trapped Ward lbw for 63 from 77 deliveries, which included seven fours and two sixes, to make it 160-5.

Suwaris stormed on, though, reaching his century with one of 16 fours he hit to go with six sixes.

He maintained the momentum as a further 57 was added for the sixth wicket, before Narayan struck with his third delivery by bowling Nouman Aslam for 16.

Sam Harris supported Suwaris with a fluent 25 as Chesham continued to pile up the runs with Narayan ending his knock courtesy of a Sam Leslie catch.

The leg-spinner then mopped up the tail with three wickets in the penultimate over to finish with 5-33. Alfie Clifford gave Stephen Green a third victim behind the stumps, before Moteeb Syed and Henry Sussum were lbw to successive deliveries.

With Horspath's innings reduced to 43 overs, Konidena (31), Tom Nichols (22) and Narayan (33) all made good starts at the top of the order without going on to make substantial contributions.

Syed (3-57) and Henry Sussum (2-59) picked up wickets as the hosts collapsed to 103-6, but then Derval Green lit up the early evening with a dazzling display.

The Jamaican star peppered the boundaries, reaching his second Home Counties fifty of the season with one of three fours to add to six sixes.

He was supported by captain Amin Rafiq in a seventh-wicket stand of 60 before the captain was caught by Harris off Simardeep Singh.

Green's 42-ball knock ended shortly afterwards with Singh claiming a second wicket as Syed took the catch at long off.

But then Asad and Turnbull came together to defy Chesham in a terrific unbroken partnership, beating Horspath's previous best for the ninth wicket of 75 set by Lloyd Belcher (48no) and Will Eason (43) against Wargrave on July 16, 2022.

The draw saw Horspath pick up 12 points after being deducted five for a slow over rate, and Chesham 15 after being docked three for the same reason.

The side are now sixth ahead of Saturday's trip to bottom club Challow & Childrey, who lost to new leaders Oxford by four wickets.
