Cummings is hat-trick hero in Horspath 3rd's win

07 Jul 2025

Josh Cummings claimed a hat-trick in a five-wicket haul as Horspath 3rd triumphed by four wickets in a rain-affected Cherwell League Division 4B game at Challow & Childrey 2nd.

The seamer achieved the notable feat in the first over of his second spell with Challow 157-6 after choosing to bat.

He struck first when captain Mohson Rana took a good catch at short extra cover to remove Alfie Roche, before bowling Harry Robson and Marc Gregory with his next two deliveries.

Cummings wrapped up the innings with the last delivery of his next over to finish with impressive figures of 5-18 from 12 overs and leave Challow 163 all out.

Remarkably, it was the second time a 3rd XI bowler had claimed a hat-trick this season after Nishi Ranasinghe's terrific treble against Stonesfield on May 17.

Cummings's new ball partner, Erasmus Du Toit (3-26), had made early inroads into the Challow batting with the first three wickets before the hat-trick hero claimed his first victim to make it 24-4.

Joe Moorman (64) and Joe Westmoreland (20) held Horspath up, before Moorman shared a stand of 85 with Alex Lynch (46no) for the sixth wicket.

Dougal Main (2-36) ended their partnership to set the scene for Cummings's hat-trick heroics. It was his second five-wicket haul of the season after his 6-32 against Charlbury and took his tally for the campaign to 20.

Opener George Crawford then made it back-to-back half-centuries with an unbeaten 74 to steer Horspath home at 164-4.

Fresh from hitting his maiden Cherwell fifty with 56 against Chipping Norton last week, he shared partnerships of 50 with Alfie Turner (31) for the first wicket, and 82 with Azlan Sharif (31) for the second wicket. His runs came off 98 balls and included 12 fours.

The win moves the side up to second ahead of Saturday's home game against Dorchester-on-Thames, who drew at Chipping Norton.

Horspath's hopes of completing a double at the weekend were dashed when they slipped to a nail-biting two-wicket defeat in a rain-hit Airey Cup quarter-final at Aston Rowant 3rd.

In a match reduced to 30 overs, Horspath were held to 111-8 after being put in to bat. Crawford (30) and Ehsan Hussain (19) put on 47 for the first wicket, but then the innings fell away with Ben Knowler (3-15) and Joe Hill (2-16) pegging the visitors back.

Cummings (3-18) and Luke Heritage (2-14) had Rowant in early trouble at 10-4, but then Liam Hester (31) and Knowler (29) put on 57 for the fifth wicket, before both fell to Dhishanth Benolin (2-22).

However, Joseph Dodd edged Rowant towards the target, before Hill and Jack North saw them over the line at 112-8 with an over to spare.
