Horspath go for Village Cup glory

06 Jun 2025

Horspath bid to be crowned Oxfordshire area champions in the Voneus Village Cup for the fourth time in five years when the side face Aston Rowant in the county final at the Recreation Ground on Sunday (1pm).

It's a repeat of the 2021 final when Horspath ended a 42-year wait to reclaim the Oxon title with a memorable 80-run victory at home to Rowant.

Horspath went out to Rowant with a 42-run defeat in the second round a year later, but regained the crown in 2023 with a thrilling one-wicket victory off the last ball at Tiddington.

A successful defence was staged last year with a nail-biting four-wicket win at Oxford Downs - the seventh time the club have been area champions.

This time, Horspath have reached the decider by powering past Oxford & Bletchingdon Nondescripts by 115 runs, racing to a seven-wicket win at Shipton-under-Wychwood before edging a four-run thriller at Langford.

Rowant's route to the regional final saw them beat Minster Lovell by 14 runs, before being handed a walkover by Great & Little Tew and then defeat Tiddington by nine wickets.

The prize for the winners of the fourth-round tie is a place in the national rounds on June 22. All supporters are welcome.

The Village Cup tie forms part of a big double-header at the Rec this weekend for Horspath with second-placed Gerrards Cross the visitors in Home Counties Premier Cricket League Division 2 tomorrow.

Jamaican international all-rounder Derval Green, the club's overseas signing, is set to make his much-anticipated debut following a hold-up with his visa application.

Meanwhile, Horspath 2nd bid to make it five wins out of five when they visit Brackley in Cherwell League Division 2.

Horspath 3rd seek to strengthen their position at the top of Division 4B with a trip to Stanton Harcourt in Division 4B, while Horspath 4th entertain Division 6C leaders Frieth.
