Wharton ton sparks Horspath 4th's win

04 Jun 2025

Captain Craig Wharton hammered a superb unbeaten century as Horspath 4th raced to a nine-wicket win against Didcot 4th in Cherwell League Division 6C at Boundary Park.

Wharton made 125 not out from 113 balls to see the visitors home at 217-1 after they had inserted Didcot and restricted them to 213-7.

The skipper led the way in an undefeated second-wicket stand of 190 with Archie Lewins, who played his part with an unbeaten 51.

Wharton reached the milestone of 3,000 Cherwell runs when he had made 10 before bringing up his fifty and then motoring on to a century.

It was his third Cherwell ton, eclipsing his previous best of 121 against Dorchester-on-Thames in Division 5C in 2022.

Lewins, who has just turned 17, brought up his fifty shortly before victory was secured with his fine knock coming off 83 balls and including four boundaries.

Earlier, Horspath had held Didcot in check with Dhishanth Benolin (2-27), Adrian Manger (2-42) and Ehsan Hussain (2-54) among the wickets as Keyor Mistry (47) top-scored for Didcot supported by Amjad Saifullakhan (32) and Asif Chaudhary (30).

The win moves Horspath up two places to sixth ahead of Saturday's home game against leaders Frieth, who made it four wins out of four with a 121-run victory over Abingdon Vale 2nd.
