Horspath survive scare in Village Cup thriller

27 May 2025

Horspath survived an almighty scare to pull off a thrilling four-run victory in an absorbing Voneus Village Cup third-round tie at Langford.

The reigning Oxfordshire Group champions were made to battle for their 188-6 from 40 overs after choosing to bat.

Langford staged a spirited run chase and arrived at the last over bowled by Ryan Hicks needing seven to win with the last pair at the crease.

They picked up two from the third delivery, but then Hicks bowled Jack Brown for 12 to leave the West of England Premier League Gloucestershire side 184 all out.

Now Horspath can look forward to taking on Aston Rowant in round four - the Oxfordshire area final - at the Recreation Ground on Sunday, June 8.

The visitors had found themselves in early trouble at 35-3, before opener Robbie Eason and his brother, Will, set about repairing the damage.

They took the score to 65 when Robbie was bowled for a patient 30 by Brown, who returned outstanding figures of 2-10 from his eight overs, well supported by Tom Stevens (2-20).

Will kept the scoreboard ticking, though, and with Tyron Eyles taking the attack to Langford the run rate increased.

They had put on 56 for the sixth wicket when Will was caught by Jake Romanek off Freddie Webb for 36 to make it 142-6.

The momentum was now with Horspath and Jehan Mohammed joined Eyles to share an unbroken stand of 46 from the final 5.2 overs.

Eyles, having played the side's crucial innings, finished unbeaten with 47 from 39 balls including six fours and a six, while Mohammed ended on 28 not out from 19 deliveries.

Romanek and Harry Stevens got Langford's reply off to a solid start, putting on 41 before Will Eason made the breakthrough by bowling the latter for 20.

Horspath then turned to spin and wickets fell at regular intervals as Langford slipped to 90-6.

Josh Richardson was the chief destroyer with Romanek included in his haul when he trapped the opener for 30.

However, Tom Stevens and Tino Mushoga frustrated Horspath with a sixth-wicket stand of 56 to lift the hosts' hopes.

Skipper Amin Rafiq (2-30) returned to the attack to have Mushonga caught by Richardson for 21 to make it 146-6 in the 34th over.

With Langford edging closer to the target, Richardson bowled Zak Moledina to finish with impressive figures of 4-30 and make it 166-8 with 21 balls remaining.

Stevens continued to thwart Horspath, though, and reached his half-century before he was run out by Amin for a run-a-ball 53 with five fours to leave Langford eight runs short of victory at 181-9 and as many balls left.

Hicks (2-37) then stepped up to bowl the final over and kept his cool to secure a most dramatic victory.

Aston Rowant, meanwhile, had a much easier passage with a nine-wicket win at home to Tiddington, who were restricted to 142-8, before Jamie Revill smashed an unbeaten 87.
