Horspath host Nondies in Village Cup switch

27 Feb 2025

Horspath's Voneus Village Cup first-round tie against Oxford & Bletchingdon Nondescripts will now take place at the Recreation Ground on Sunday, April 27.
The match has been switched at Nondies' request and agreed to on the proviso that if it should be cancelled the rearranged fixture will take place at Horspath the following Sunday.
The prize for the winners is a trip to either 2002 and 2003 national champions Shipton-under-Wychwood or Challow & Childrey in round two on May 11.
Horspath will be bidding for a hat-trick of Oxfordshire titles and a fourth in five years. The club's triumphs in 2023 and 2024 were preceded by runs to the last 16 in the national rounds where the journey on the road to Lord's ended on both occasions at Devon & Cornwall champions Grampound Road.
There are 17 clubs in the Oxfordshire (Group 19) section with Oxford Downs, who Horspath defeated by four wickets in last year's regional final, drawn at home to Langford in the only preliminary round tie.
Tiddington, the 1995 national runners-up, are at home to Sandford St Martin in round one, while Cumnor host Goring on Thames and Aston Rowant visit Minster Lovell.
Oxfordshire is the area with the fourth highest entry behind North Yorkshire (North) (22), East Midlands (20) and Hampshire (18).
The draw, which involved 364 teams across 32 regions, saw reigning champions Foxton Granta (Cambridgeshire & Norfolk) drawn away to debutants Buckden in the first round.
Gloucestershire’s Dumbleton, runners-up last year and winners in 2022, were placed in the neighbouring Worcestershire group and begin their quest with a home match against Bredon.
Grampound Road, who went on to reach the semi-finals in the last two years, will start at Constantine, although they are unlikely to be able to field such a strong side this year after being promoted to the Cornwall League Premier Division.
The heart of the Village Cup lies within the North Yorkshire (North) region, with four previous winners. The most successful team, Woodhouse Grange, who have won four times in seven final visits including triumphing against Tiddington 30 years ago, have been given a bye through the preliminary rounds and will face newcomers East Harlsey.
The three other former winners from the region, Sheriff Hutton Bridge (2003), Folkton & Flixton (2018) and Forge Valley (1986) all face preliminary round ties.
In the Glamorgan & Gwent region, Sully Centurions, who won the cup in 2004, will play 2001 champions Ynystawe, who ended Horspath's adventure in 2021.
Seven teams have entered all 54 years of the competition which includes Scotland’s only previous winners, Freuchie, and the 1978 and 1999 champions, Linton Park, from Kent.
