Horspath's Lord's dreams dashed in Cornwall

15 Jul 2024

Horspath's dreams of going all the way to Lord's in the Voneus Village Cup were dashed in familiar fashion with a five-wicket defeat at Cornwall side Grampound Road in their replayed sixth-round tie.
Twelve months on from an agonising 14-run defeat away to the Devon & Cornwall champions in the last 16, the side were foiled again at the same stage after being restricted to 127-9 off 40 overs on choosing to bat.
It always looked a below-par total and despite a spirited bowling display, the Roadies captain Tom Orpe hit an unbeaten 56 to steer his side to victory at 131-5 with three overs to spare.
The Oxfordshire champions embarked on the near 500-mile round trip to the club near St Austell after the original tie was abandoned a week earlier when the Recreation Ground was hit by a massive deluge during the tea interval with the hosts having made 179 all out - a score surpassed in round six only by Dumbleton's 218-6.
Batting first again, Horspath suffered an early blow when Jimmy Phillips fell lbw to quickie Nathan Keevil. Fellow opener Hussaan Ahmad and Stephen Green moved the score on to 30, before the former was caught by Tom Fox-Dean off Alex Lean for 17.
With Grampound Road bowling tight lines, Horspath reached the mid-innings drink break at 47-2 but were rocked shortly afterwards when Josh Richardson gave Fox-Dean a return catch.
Green and Elliot Ruff took the score to 88-3 at the end of the 30th over, and the stage was set for a late onslaught.
However, it never materialised as six wickets fell in the last 10 overs to the Roadies' accurate attack for the addition of just 39 runs. Ruff was caught by Thomas Hughes off Fox-Dean for 20, repeating his score of a week ago, before Tyron Eyles became a second caught and bowled victim for Fox-Dean.
Amin Rafiq was trapped lbw by David Neville, and two balls later Green went in the same fashion to the off-spinner for a valiant 44.
With a good travelling support looking on, Horspath had struggled to find the boundary all innings, and the Cornwall League Division 1 leaders tightened their grip in the last over bowled by Lean.
Jehan Mohammed was stumped by Harry Gregory, and Asad Rafiq was run out, leaving skipper Will Eason undefeated on 11. The wickets were shared between Fox-Dean (3-25), Lean (2-29), Neville (2-31) and Keevil (1-23).
Early wickets were crucial if Horspath were to have a chance of defending their total, and Asad provided the perfect start by bowling Jack Mingo in his first over.
The Horspath paceman struck again when Chris Roberts edged into Ahmad's gloves to make it 17-2, and the Cherwell League Division 1 leaders were in the game.
However, Orpe and Lean steadied the ship for the Roadies, taking the score on to 49, before the latter was bowled by Amin's off-spin for 17.
Richardson then got in on the act by bowling Hughes to make it 68-4 in the 25th over, before his leg-spin accounted for Daniel Ferris with Amin taking the catch and at 74-5 the game was still in the balance.
But there was to be no further joy for the visitors as Gregory joined Orpe in an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 57.
Grampound Road's captain thumped the only six of the match to bring up his side's 100, while Eason rang the changes in a bid to make the breakthrough.
Adopting the ploy used so successfully in the win over Peppard Stoke Row in the previous round, Ahmad swapped his wicket-keeper's pads and gloves with Green to join the attack.
This time it wasn't to work, though, as Orpe went to his fifty with a four before sweeping the next ball to the boundary to bring his side victory and seal Horspath's fate.
The Roadies' skipper's runs came off 83 deliveries and included four fours and a six, while Gregory was unbeaten on 23. Richardson's excellent spell saw him finish with 2-17 off eight overs, while Asad returned figures of 2-22 and Amin bowled superbly in taking 1-9 from seven overs.
It brought an end to another terrific run to the last 16 for Horspath, equalling the furthest the club has gone in the competition, having also reached this stage last year and in 1979 when they bowed out to Ynysygerwn.
Grampound Road, meanwhile, will bid to take the next step on the road to Lord's when they entertain Painswick (Gloucestershire) in the quarter-finals on Sunday.
