Coleman on route 66 in Horspath draw

14 Jul 2024

Tom Coleman kept up his good form with a half-century as leaders Horspath maintained their unbeaten record in Cherwell League Division 1 with a hard-fought draw against second-placed Didcot at Boundary Park.

Fresh from making 70 in the abandoned Voneus Village Cup tie against Grampound Road, the opener hit 66 to set Horspath on the way to 175-7 in reply to Didcot's 235-9 after putting the hosts in to bat.

Coleman cracked nine fours and a six in his 93-ball stay, sharing a second-wicket stand of 103 with Hussaan Ahmad (38), before the pair both fell to Jordan Morrison (6-34) as the visitors were pegged back.

With victory out of sight, it was left to Josh Richardson (32no) to steer Horspath to safety at the close.

Didcot picked up the bulk of the bonus points to trim Horspath's lead at the top, but it is still a commanding 48 points.

Richardson had earlier shone with the ball, taking 4-69 in Didcot's innings. The leg-spinner's haul included Jacob Townsend, who hit three fours and two sixes to top score with 51 from 54 deliveries.

Stand-in skipper Amin Rafiq picked up 2-43 after Baltej Tattla (48) and Josh Giddings (38) put on 67 for Didcot's second wicket.

The side are back on home territory next Saturday when Banbury 2nd are the visitors.

Horspath 2nd battled hard to hold Division 2 leaders Oxford Downs 2nd to a draw in a game of fluctuating fortunes at the Recreation Ground.

The hosts were rewarded for putting Downs in to bat by reducing them to 26-3 with Nishi Ranasinghe (2-26) removing both openers, before Erasmus Du Toit (2-41) also struck.

Captain Curtly Slatter (71) led the visitors' fightback, but Horspath remained in the driving seat as three quick wickets fell to make it 88-6.

However, the hosts were then frustrated when Slatter was joined by Gus Watts (44) to put on 80 for the seventh wicket.

Wicket-keeper George Crawford ran out Watts to break the stand and Downs were eventually 193 all out with skipper Ryan Hicks taking 3-43 including Slatter, whose runs came off 127 balls with six fours.

Horspath were well placed at 84-1 in the run chase only to be rocked by the loss of five wickets for 18 runs including opener Dominic O'Connor (44) as they slumped to 102-6.

Downs sensed victory but were thwarted by Luke Heritage (29) and Crawford, who saw the side to the close at 161-8 as Wasim Mehmood took 4-57 and Sam Herbert 3-21.

Horspath remain in sixth spot ahead of next Saturday's trip to third-placed Tiddington.

Captain Mohson Rana and opener Luke Finch hit half-centuries as Horspath 3rd recorded an excellent four-wicket win at Long Marston to slash the gap at the bottom of Division 3A.

Having bowled out the Hertfordshire hosts for 154 after inserting them, Horspath were wobbling at 41-4.

But then Rana (65no) and Finch (58) put on 100 for the fifth wicket to take the side to the brink of victory, which was secured at 155-6.

Rana was the more aggressive of the pair with 11 fours in his 85-ball knock, while a patient Finch faced 117 deliveries with six boundaries to post his first Cherwell fifty since 2017. Luan Liebenberg took 3-43 for Long Marston.

Horspath, who had been 23 points adrift at the foot of the table going into the game, are now just two points behind Banbury 3rd with Long Marston a further two points above the north Oxfordshire club in eighth place.

The visitors' success was built on a good display with the ball as teenagers Sammy Parker (3-17) and Julius Leslie, who took 2-41 from 17 overs, were well supported by Jason Cardy (2-21).

Opener Matthew Wareham top-scored with 50, but after he fell to Parker to make it 90-3 only Balaji Kumar Jinka (36) provided any resistance.

The side will seek to build on this win when they entertain second-placed Tetsworth next Saturday.

Horspath 4th succumbed to an eight-wicket defeat at home to third-placed Wantage & Grove in Division 5C.

Captain Craig Wharton (29) top-scored as the hosts were bowled out for 106 with Winston Wiggins (4-36) and Andy Buckland (3-24) doing the damage.

Stuart Berry and Ben Wise picked up a wicket apiece in Wantage's run chase, but Dave Spencer (34no) and Wiggins (31no) saw the visitors home at 109-2 after Al Burdett made 29.

The side visit Radley in a basement battle next Saturday.
