Biggs stars as Horspath reach Hartwell semis
04 Jul 2024
Opener Lachlan Biggs hit his second consecutive Hartwell Senior Cup half-century as Horspath stormed to a 72-run home win over Oxford in Pool 1 to book a place in the semi-finals.
The 19-year-old Australian slammed 56 off 34 balls - matching the score he posted in last week's win over Tiddington - to set the group leaders on the way to 177-7 after they had elected to bat.
His sparkling knock included seven fours and two sixes as he shared an opening stand of 62 with Charlie Turner (18).
Tyron Eyles chipped in with a quickfire 21, before skipper Amin Rafiq smashed an unbeaten 40 from 27 deliveries to take Horspath to a challenging total.
Amin's brother, Asad (2-20), then rocked Oxford by bowling both openers to make it 11-2. Jack Hobbs (37) and captain George Tait attempted to revive the innings with 57 for the third wicket.
But after Hobbs was stumped by Biggs off Jehan Mohammed (2-14), Oxford collapsed to 105 all out off 15 overs with the last eight wickets crashing for 37 runs.
Spinners Joval Calix and Sam Leslie both picked up 2-18, while Ryan Hicks took 1-13.
Horspath, who complete their group games at home to Tiddington on Tuesday, have now won three out of three in Pool 1 and are assured of top spot.
The side will go into the semi-finals along with Pool 4 winners Banbury, Oxford Downs or Bicester & North Oxford from Pool 3, and either Aston Rowant, Henley or Thame Town from Pool 2.
The winners in the last four go forward to finals day at Wormsley on Sunday, September 15.
