Horspath dig deep for Village Cup victory

24 Jun 2024

Horspath produced a stirring fightback to secure a 31-run victory over Berkshire champions Peppard Stoke Row in the Voneus Village Cup fifth round at the Recreation Ground.

The Oxfordshire area winners were in trouble at 52-5 following a superb opening spell of 4-16 from seamer Scott Harris.

But excellent half-centuries from skipper Will Eason and Tyron Eyles saw Horspath recover to post a challenging 223-8 in front of a buoyant crowd of around 250.

The home side's bowlers supported by some brilliant catching - including a wonder effort by Jimmy Phillips - then dismissed Peppard for 192 despite Harris hammering 53 and opener Jason Vaughan-Davies making 49.

Now Horspath take the next step on the road to Lord's with a repeat of the last-16 tie of 12 months ago against Devon & Cornwall champions Grampound Road, but this time at home on Sunday, July 7.

Peppard enjoyed a dream start after choosing to bowl when Harris found the edge of Tom Coleman's bat with the first ball and wicket-keeper Dan Watts gratefully accepted the chance.

Phillips produced the first runs off the bat with a four through the covers in the second over, before Hussaan Ahmad despatched a six over the hedge at backward square leg and then glided a boundary through backward point to get the innings up and running.

But then Phillips edged Danny McAllister to Richard Ashton at first slip to make it 19-2. Harris was getting the ball to swing under the grey skies, and he bowled Stephen Green before Josh Richardson nicked into Watts's gloves.

Ahmad had made 25 when he was bowled in Harris's last over, and the Thames Valley League Division 3a club were firmly on top.

However, Elliot Ruff and Eason set about repairing the damage. They moved the score on to 95 when Ruff, who had looked in good touch with boundaries around the ground to reach 28, top-edged a sweep off spinner Ashley Hayden to short fine leg where Vaughan-Davies dived to take a stunning right-handed catch inches above the ground.

As the sun broke through, Eason, who had been using the late cut to good effect, was joined by Eyles to continue Horspath's revival with the latter quickly into his stride with two sweep shots for four.

Eason smacked a couple of superb boundaries through extra cover before going to a well-made half-century with a cracking square cut for four.

The pair had added 73 for the seventh wicket when Eason in attempting to turn the ball to the legside top-edged a simple catch back up in the air to Rudi Derbyshire to fall for 52. His runs came off 65 balls and included eight boundaries.

Eyles had already hit powerfully through the legside before he took a step down the pitch and smashed a six over the scout hut. He whipped another four through mid-wicket, before surviving a chance to long off and then completed his half-century when a miscued drive bounced over the fielder at third man and into the boundary by the nets.

He was in full flow at this stage and launched the next ball for six into the car park by the road before being bowled by Derbyshire for 58 going for another big hit. His scintillating 46-ball knock featured seven fours and two sixes.

It was left to Amin Rafiq (18no) to ensure the innings finished with a flourish with a six over the machinery shed and another boundary down to fine leg in the last over to the delight of the home supporters.

Peppard openers Vaughan-Davies and Derbyshire quickly made their intentions clear with some expansive shots at the start of their innings.

But Derbyshire was stopped in his tracks with the score on 17 when he skied a drive off Eason and Josh Richardson stepped in from backward point to take a good catch.

There was no keeping Horspath's captain marvel out of the action and he took a sharp head-high catch at slip to dismiss Mark Harper off Asad Rafiq and make it 36-2.

Vaughan-Davies clouted a six, before Asad's brother, Amin, struck in his first over when Owen Simmons played on, and Horspath tightened their grip at 54-4 with Eason trapping Harry Roberts lbw.

The dangerous Vaughan-Davies continued to rack up the boundaries with some lusty legside blows as he settled into playing a more controlled innings. He had reached 49 when Asad ran in from long off to take a good catch low down off Richardson to leave the visitors 102-5.

However, Harris continued to score freely with Watts and the game was in the balance as the pair put on 58 for the sixth wicket to take Peppard to 160 in the 33rd over.

Harris had just completed a fine half-century with a single to the cover boundary when Phillips produced a match-changing moment with a sensational catch on the long off boundary.

The Peppard all-rounder looked to have cleared the rope when he drove down the ground off Ahmad, who had come on to bowl after swapping the wicket-keeper's gloves with Green, only for Phillips to dive full length and stick out his right hand to clutch the ball in mid-air.

It was a case of lightning striking twice as Phillips performed similar heroics in the same spot in the win over Wembdon at the same stage last year when he jumped in the air to take an amazing catch with the same hand high above his head. Harris had faced 66 balls, hitting six fours and a six.

Watts had already hit a six into the wood facia of the scout hut when he tried to repeat the feat off Richardson and was caught by Joval Calix at long on for 24 to make it 163-7.

Horspath were sensing victory and Ahmad struck twice in the penultimate over with Calix taking two good catches on the mid-wicket boundary by the nets to dismiss Hayden and McAllister.

With the home fans in full voice, Amin sealed victory in the last over when Richard Ashton skied the penultimate delivery and Green ran back from behind the stumps to take the catch and spark the celebrations.

The contributions of Eason and Eyles had been key with the bat, before a fine all-round team performance in the field clinched the success with the wickets shared between Ahmad (3-15), Eason (2-27), Richardson (2-34), Amin (2-38) and Asad (1-27).

The win equals the furthest the club have gone in the Village Cup, having reached the last 16 in both 1979, when the run was ended by Ynysygerwn, and last year, when Grampound Road triumphed by 14 runs in Cornwall.

Now Horspath get the chance to turn the tables when the two sides meet again at the Rec after the Cornish side posted a 74-run home win over Sully Spartans (Glamorgan & Gwent) in a rain-affected encounter. Click below for Sunday's highlights.
