Horspath make it six of the best

17 Jun 2024

An impressive bowling display saw leaders Horspath make it six wins out of six in Cherwell League Division 1 with an eight-wicket victory at home to Cumnor.

The start was delayed by 30 minutes following rain overnight and in the morning.

But once play got under way skipper Will Eason (2-20) and Asad Rafiq (1-24) made early inroads with the new ball as Cumnor were bowled out for 125 after choosing to bat.

With the club hosting a sponsors' lunch as a show of appreciation for their support, spinners Joval Calix (3-20), Josh Richardson (2-13), Viv Narayan (1-20) and Amin Rafiq (1-27) worked their way through the rest of the order with captain Patrick Knightley (21) top-scoring for the visitors.

Openers Hussaan Ahmad (48) and Jimmy Phillips (28) provided a solid foundation for Horspath's run chase with a stand of 85 before falling in quick succession.

Ahmad was within two runs of a second half-century this season when he was run out by Will Price going for two.

Stephen Green then continued his fine run of form by belting three sixes in an unbeaten 33 off 17 balls as Horspath eased home at 126-2 off 30.1 overs just before rain arrived.

The side remain 17 points clear at the top ahead of the trip to Leighton Buzzard Town next Saturday.

Horspath 2nd had hosts Shipton-under-Wychwood in trouble at 18-2 after 9.2 overs when their Division 2 match was washed out.

Nishi Ranasinghe (2-5) removed both openers before heavy rain meant no further play was possible.

The side are at home to Wolverton next Saturday.
