Narayan and Calix star in Horspath's T20 win
14 Jun 2024
Viv Narayan smashed a brilliant 66 off 34 balls and Joval Calix returned superb figures of 5-27 as Horspath made a flying start to their Hartwell Senior Cup Pool 1 campaign with a 16-run victory away to Oxford.
In a repeat of last year's final, which Oxford won by 30 runs, Narayan lit up the Oxford University Press Sports Ground with a brutal display of clean hitting to steer the visitors to 155-8 after they had elected to bat.
He plundered five fours and five mighty sixes in his whirlwind knock to take the match away from the hosts in stunning fashion.
Openers Charlie Turner (21) and Lachlan Biggs (16) had set the tone with 32 off the first three overs only for Horspath to be pegged back to 73-5 by Balaji Ramalingham (2-9) and captain George Tait (2-21).
But Narayan then took centre stage, dominating a seventh-wicket stand of 52 with skipper Amin Rafiq, before he was caught by Jack Wilkins off Raj Chowdaboyina (2-21).
On an overcast evening, it looked a challenging total and Oxford's task became even greater as off-spinner Calix struck three times to send them crashing to 32-4.
Opener Manan Parmar hammered 23 off 14 deliveries before falling to a good catch at mid-off by substitute Dan Todd, fielding in place of Tyron Eyles, who picked up a hip injury while batting.
But even better was to come off Calix's next ball when Narayan swooped to take a sensational diving catch inches inside the mid-wicket boundary to dismiss the dangerous Tait.
Wilkins rallied Oxford with 31 off 22 balls before being bowled by Narayan (1-19), and despite Brendon Smith (22) and Adam Hall (21) chipping in, the hosts fell short on 139-9 with Calix completing his five-wicket haul and Amin Rafiq taking 2-22.
The competition format is slightly different this year with four groups of three - Tiddington are the other side in Pool 1 - with the winners going forward to the semi-finals.
Horspath's next game is at Tiddington on Tuesday, June 25, with Oxford entertaining Tiddington next Tuesday.
