Double delight for Horspath women

14 Jun 2024

Horspath's women signed off their Home Counties League Super 8 Development programme with an excellent brace of wins over hosts Dinton and Oxford to finish third in Group 3.

Following a tentative start to the campaign, Horspath have progressively gained momentum throughout these intensive matches.

Under the guidance of dedicated coach Jonty Hedges, the squad is undergoing a significant rebuilding phase.

There have been some spectacular displays of athleticism, reading of the game, decision making and skilful play, qualities essential as they make history by competing in the Home Counties Women’s Cricket League for the first time this weekend.

And the progress they have made showed in the triangular competition at Dinton as they opened with a 21-run win over the hosts, before making it a double on the day by storming to a 60-run victory against Oxford.

Having restricted the hosts to 75-2 off their 16 overs for a net score of 265 after electing to field, Horspath raced to 101-3 for a net 286.

Irum Ibrahim (2-12) starred with the ball for Horspath, before captain Munaza Dogar cracked an unbeaten 30 to steer the side to victory.

Horspath then restricted Oxford to 74-5 for a net 249 after putting them in to bat, before making 119-2 for a net 309.

Munaza took 2-9 and there was a wicket apiece for Sophia Pavlides and Rathi Puliyadi. Superb knocks from Tracey Isaac (26) and Bridget Wise (20) took Horspath to victory with their total boosted by 43 extras.

In the previous round of fixtures, Horspath went down by 13 runs at home to both Tiddington and Freeland.

The hosts were held to 84-3 for a net 269 after choosing to bat against Tiddington, who replied with 112-6 for a net 282. Victoria Montgomery (2-13) and Maya Khan (2-24) were Horspath's chief wicket-takers.

The side were then restricted to 82-5 for a net 257 after being inserted by Freeland, who made 90-4 for a net 270 despite a wicket apiece for Irum and Victoria.

With the opening round at Dinton washed out, Horspath started their campaign with an exciting one-run win over Oxford at Freeland.

Oxford posted 70-3 off 12 overs for a net 255 after being put in to bat, with a wicket apiece for Tracey, Maya and Irum plus two stunning catches from Mary Pavlides.

However, Horspath secured victory with 66-2 for a net 256 as Tracey's knock of 15 proved decisive.

Freeland proved 24 runs too good in Horspath's second game with the hosts posting 70-1 for a net 265 after choosing to bat. Horspath replied with 61-4 for a net 241.

The team are proud of their accomplishments with players finishing in the top 10 for bowling and batting.

They are determined to maintain that consistency as they look forward to their first Home Counties League Division 3 South game at home to Steventon on Sunday (12).

The team would also like to acknowledge the support of our lift givers, followers, umpires and scorers for their unwavering dedication to progressing the advancement of women and girls' cricket at the club.

All supporters are welcome.
