Horspath go for glory in finals double-header

18 Aug 2023

HORSPATH will be chasing silverware on two fronts on a finals day double-header this Sunday.
While the 4th XI face holders Bledlow Ridge 2nd in the Steve Dixon Memorial Cup decider at Fringford, the Under 19s will have home advantage in the Oxfordshire League Finals Day at the Recreation Ground.
The 4th XI booked their place in the final of the competition for Cherwell League Tier 6 sides with an emphatic nine-wicket win at home to Risinghurst 2nd in the last four.
Azlan Sharif (6-25) and skipper Craig Wharton (84no) were Horspath's match-winners as they coasted to victory.
Bledlow Ridge also dominated their semi-final, posting 185-4 to beat Horley by 74 runs.
Top of Division 6A, Horspath 4th are chasing a league and cup double with Bledlow Ridge seventh in the same section.
The only game between the two sides this season - the first encounter was washed out on the opening day - was drawn with Horspath posting 106-8 in reply to the hosts 143-5. Ian Murdoch did the damage with 5-24.
Horspath Under 19s, meanwhile, will face Cropredy in the semi-finals at the Oxfordshire League Finals Day, while holders Cumnor take on Banbury.
The hosts booked their place by finishing runners-up to Cumnor in Pool 2, winning five of their six games with victories over Aston Rowant, Didcot, Oxford, Wolvercote and Tiddington.
Their only defeat came in Monday's final match against old rivals Cumnor when they went down by five wickets after being restricted to 120-6.
Cropredy finished top of Pool 1 by virtue of their head-to-head record with Banbury after the pair finished level on points.
As well as beating Banbury, they also defeated Horley and were handed concessions by Oxford Downs and Shipton-under-Wychwood with their only defeat coming against Minster Lovell.
Horspath have both the competition's leading runscorer in Rayaan Dogar with 204 including a brilliant unbeaten 105 off 57 balls against Wolvercote, and the leading wicket-taker in Joe Gibbs with 10 victims.
The club lifted the Honey-'B' Trophy named in memory of the late Horspath player Morris Honey in the 2020 renewal, delayed 12 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic, before finishing runners-up to Cumnor for the last two years.
The semi-finals start at 10.30 followed by the final in the afternoon.
