Ton-up Turner shines in Airey Cup triumph
11 Jul 2023
ALFIE Turner hit a sparkling century in
Horspath 3rd's
emphatic 110-run win at Kidlington in the Cherwell League's Airey Cup quarter-finals.
Turner cracked 15 fours and three sixes in a brilliant 112 to lead Horspath to 266-5 off 40 overs after they were put in to bat in the competition for Tier 3 and 4 sides.
He shared a stand of 63 with opener Alex Thomas (25) for the second wicket, before adding 99 for the third wicket with Dougal Main, who blasted four sixes in his 40.
It was left to Lukas Yendole (23no) and Paul Hicks (17no) to take the visitors to their final total.
Kidlington were never in the hunt despite a fine unbeaten 93 from Edd Willmott, whose knock included 15 fours, as they replied with 156-7.
Opener Richard Walker made 22 before becoming one of two victims for Dan Todd (2-23). Off-spinner Luke Heritage picked up 2-39, while Main provided the most economical figures with 1-19 off eight overs.
Horspath are now at home to Oxenford - who beat Hanborough by 34 runs - in the semi-finals on Sunday, July 30. Hook Norton host Banbury 3rd in the other semi-final.
Sunday's success completed an excellent weekend for Horspath 3rd after they hammered bottom club Bledlow Ridge by 183 runs in Division 3A on Saturday with skipper Ryan Hicks claiming a five-wicket haul.
The hosts rattled up 252-9 off 44 overs after being inserted with opener Todd (84) and Turner (69) putting on 114 for the third wicket.
Todd's runs came off 92 deliveries and included 10 fours and two sixes, while Turner hit 14 fours in his 57-ball stay.
Todd also shared a stand of 57 for the fourth wicket with Ryan Hicks, before Jason Cardy smashed a run-a-ball unbeaten 20 in the closing overs.
Phillip Brooks (4-59), Matthew Brightwell (3-58) and Josh Brooks (2-46) were the Ridge wicket-takers.
The visitors then crashed to 69 all out with left-arm spinner Hicks (5-10) polishing them off after Cardy had taken 3-16.
Opener Michael Winson (27) provided the only resistance as the last eight wickets fell for 20 runs.
Horspath 4th
were knocked off the top of Division 6A after being on the wrong end of a draw at Bledlow Ridge 2nd.
The visitors, who went into the game with a 14-point cushion at the summit, restricted Ridge to 143-5 off 43 overs after putting them in to bat.
Openers Charlie Carter (40) and John Rolfe (30) put on 55 before Adrian Manger made the breakthrough with skipper Craig Wharton claiming the first of four victims behind the stumps.
Left-arm spinner Robin Pykett then held the home side in check with 3-43.
However, Horspath's batting failed to fire with Ian Murdoch (5-24) doing the damage, and it took a defiant ninth-wicket stand between tailenders Stuart Berry (19no) and Tom Smith to secure the draw at 106-8 off 39 overs.
The result sees Horspath drop to second spot, five points behind Watlington.
