Six-shooter Oakley fires up Horspath 2nd again

05 Aug 2026

Ed Oakley went one better than last week with superb figures of 6-52 as Horspath 2nd marched on at the top of Cherwell League Division 1 with a five-wicket win at second-placed Oxford Downs 2nd.

Oakley, who destroyed Didcot with 5-13 seven days earlier, maintained his impressive form to send Downs crashing to 136 all out after they elected to bat.

With opener Dan Todd hitting an unbeaten 59, Horspath secured victory at 137-5 to extend their advantage at the summit to 41 points.

Will Eason (3-25) sparked Downs' demise, reducing the Standlake-based club to 38-3 with Oakley claiming two catches.

Captain Ethan Davie and Freddie Fowler doubled the score, before Oakley removed the skipper for 35 courtesy of a Josh Cummings catch.

The Horspath seamer followed up by having Fowler caught by Dom O'Connor for 44 and then worked his way through the rest of the order in a splendid 11.4-over spell, while captain Ryan Hicks chipped in with 1-27.

The visitors' run chase got off to a shaky start, slumping to 32-3, but Todd and Elliot Ruff (24) calmed the nerves as Horspath reached 73-5.

Todd, applying himself well to the situation with eight fours in a patient 149-ball knock, and Hicks (28no) made sure there were no further alarms, taking the side to victory with an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 64.

Horspath will be seeking to tighten their grip on the division on Saturday when they entertain Bicester & North Oxford, who went second with a three-wicket win over Aston Rowant 2nd.
