Horspath 2nd dig deep for battling draw

22 Jul 2026

Horspath 2nd saw their lead at the top of Cherwell League Division 1 cut to 15 points following a nail-biting draw against Banbury 2nd at the Recreation Ground.

Having restricted the north Oxfordshire club to 169-9 after putting them in to bat with Josh Cummings taking 4-37, Horspath were in dire straits at 33-5.

But then captain Ryan Hicks (40) and Dougal Main (33) put on 72 for the sixth wicket to spark hopes of victory.

However, once they were parted by Ben Maddison (4-34), Horspath were forced to hold out at 121-9 with last pair Joe Gibbs and Ed Oakley successfully negotiating the final 17 deliveries in a tense finish.

Bowling in tandem with Ed Oakley, who picked up 2-20 from 12 accurate overs, Cummings shone with the ball during a 17-over spell in Banbury's innings.

Oakley made the breakthrough with 53 on the board by trapping Freddie Crook lbw for 29, before Cummings got in on the act.

With Hicks taking 1-28 off 14 overs and Gibbs also picking up a wicket, Horspath reduced the visitors to 137-9 only to be frustrated as Maddison (22no) and former Horspath seamer Liam Manley (18no) added a valuable 32 runs in an unbroken last-wicket stand of 32.

Manley (3-14) then blew away Horspath's top order and with Will Rorich and Dexter Ainley also striking, the hosts were in big trouble.

But Hicks and Main batted sensibly to repair the damage and had just brought the target in sight when they both fell to Maddison's spin, who left Horspath teetering on the brink at 121-9.

However, Gibbs, who faced 18 balls without scoring, while Oakley saw off 11 deliveries without registering, stood firm to secure a battling draw.

Next up on Saturday is a home game against Didcot, who drew with Aston Rowant 2nd.
