Richardson stars in Horspath's Village Cup win

27 May 2026

Josh Richardson returned to haunt Tiddington in the Cawston Press Village Cup with a fine all-round display as Horspath secured a 45-run victory in the Oxfordshire Group third round.

Back at the ground where he hit a six off the last ball to secure a thrilling one-wicket win in the 2023 regional final, Richardson once again proved a thorn in the hosts' side.

He top-scored with 55 off 57 balls as the Home Counties Premier League Division 2 club posted 216-7 after choosing to bat.

And then he took 3-28 with his leg-spinners as Tiddington tumbled to 171 all out.

Dan Todd (27) and Tyron Eyles (20) provided a good platform with an opening stand of 54 for Horspath only for the visitors to slump to 67-3.

But then Richardson joined skipper Amin Rafiq to add 50 for the fourth wicket before the captain was bowled by Ben Smith to make it 117-4.

Richardson kept up the attack, going to his half-century with his third six to add to five fours before being run out by Sam Allen's throw to the bowler's end as he went for two.

It was left to Will Eason (41) and Liam Turnbull (21no) to ensure the innings finished with a flourish with some lusty blows in a seventh-wicket stand of 59.

Left-arm spinner Ryan Hicks then reduced Tiddington to 14-2 and with wickets falling at regular intervals, Horspath were always in the driving seat.

Opener Sam Allen resisted but when he was caught by Richardson off Eason for 31, the Cherwell League Division 2B club were 71-5.

Jacob Davis (44) attempted to rally the 1995 national finalists, assisted by Peter Holland (22), before the last four wickets fell for 10 runs.

Hicks was the chief destroyer, capping fine figures of 4-21 with a superb diving catch off his own bowling backed up by Richardson and Eason (2-28).

The win saw Horspath progress to round four - and the area final - for the fifth time in six years on Sunday, June 7 when they will be at home to Langford, who won by three wickets at Cropredy.
