Konidena's terrific ton brings Horspath victory

11 Aug 2025

Sravan Konidena hit a brilliant 130 to steer Horspath to a superb four-wicket win at promotion rivals Gerrards Cross in Home Counties Premier Cricket League Division 2.

Chasing the Bucks club's 252-8 after they were put in to bat, Konidena led the way with 17 fours and three sixes in a terrific 111-ball knock.

He shared a Home Counties club record opening stand of 182 with Tom Nichols (62) as the visitors secured victory at 255-6.

The win sees Horspath leapfrog Gerrards Cross into third 14 points behind second-placed Wokingham with four games remaining.

Konidena and Nichols got the run chase off to an impressive start, taking the visitors to tea at 77-0.

Konidena completed his half-century shortly after the interval with a boundary and he continued to plunder the home attack, hitting consecutive deliveries for six and a four before taking a single to bring up the century partnership.

A Nichols four saw the pair break Horspath's previous Home Counties first-wicket record of 139 set by Konidena (74) and Dom O'Connor (55) in a rain-affected draw at home to Datchet on July 5 this year.

Nichols then completed his first Home Counties half-century with a single, before the Horspath openers eased past 150.

Konidena completed a fabulous century - his third in the league after reaching the milestone for Wargrave in each of the last two seasons - with a two.

The record-breaking partnership was finally ended when Nichols, who faced 115 balls with nine fours, was stumped by George Harvey off Teddy Fleming (4-65).

His dismissal sparked a mini collapse with three wickets fell in the space of 12 balls, leaving Horspath 188-3.

Tyron Eyles joined Konidena to steady the ship, before the opener's marvellous innings finished when he fell to Fleming with Henry Walsh taking the catch, making it 215-4.

Eyles (21) and Derval Green maintained Horspath's victory charge before captain Amin Rafiq and his brother, Asad, who hit a massive straight six, saw the visitors home.

Gerrards Cross's innings had also featured a century opening partnership. Matthew Pannett reached his fifty just before lunch, which arrived with the home side 98-0.

He had moved the score on to 113 with Chris Marrow after the resumption when the breakthrough came with Josh Richardson having Pannett caught by Green for 60 from 122 balls with nine fours.

Amin (3-54) then picked up two wickets in three balls, before adding to his tally by trapping Ben Spencer lbw for 25 to leave Gerrards Cross 178-4.

Marrow marched on, though, before he was bowled by Green for 86 from 132 balls with nine fours, making it 233-6.

Ed Snushall chipped in with a breezy 25, while Richardson exacted two run outs, including one off the last ball as captain Patrick Smith went for two.

It was a challenging target, but it wasn't enough as Konidena and Nichols rewrote the Horspath record books.

The win took the side's unbeaten run to 10 games through the time games ahead of next Saturday's home fixture against eighth-placed Chesham, who lost by seven wickets at Wokingham, as the format reverts to 50-50 matches.
