Manger stars with 8-38 as Horspath 4th win

11 Aug 2025

Adrian Manger rolled back the years with career-best figures of 8-38 as Horspath 4th made it three straight wins in Cherwell League Division 6C with a 20-run victory at third-placed Frieth.

The veteran's match-winning haul from 13.5 overs saw the Bucks club crumble to 176 all out in reply to Horspath's 196-6 after they were put in to bat.

Frieth raced to 61-0 before Sammy Parker (2-43) made the breakthrough by bowling Zaki Ali for 22.

He struck again to make it 80-2 before Manger took centre stage by working his way through the rest of the order.

He took the key wicket of opener Saqib Ghafoor, who had smashed 84 from 57 balls with 14 fours and two sixes, with his old ally, Robin Pykett, taking the catch to make it 117-4.

That sparked a collapse with six wickets falling to Manger as Frieth added just 17 runs to crash to 134-9.

But then Horspath were held up by a well-constructed last-wicket stand of 36 before Manger had Adnaan Rahman stumped brilliantly by captain Craig Wharton for 17 with Muneeb Wajid unbeaten on 15.

Manger, whose previous best was 7-15 against Oxford Rescue at Banbury Road North in 1974, was well supported by Julius Leslie, who bowled 14 overs for 37 runs without success.

The 15-year-old was completing a fine all-round effort after hitting a maiden Cherwell half-century with 63 in Horspath's innings. His runs came off 71 balls with 11 fours.

He shared a second-wicket stand of 55 with opener Tom Smith, before putting on 72 for the third wicket with Chris Jones (37) before both fell to Muneeb Wajid (3-45).

It was then left to Parker to crack an unbeaten 27 to take Horspath to their final total.

The side are now unbeaten in six games and move up to sixth ahead of Saturday's home game against fourth-placed Golden Sparrows, who beat leaders Abingdon Vale 2nd by one run.
