Derval's super all-round show for Horspath

28 Jul 2025

Derval Green produced a fine all-round display as Horspath stretched their unbeaten run in Home Counties Premier Cricket League Division 2 to eight games with a hard-fought draw at local rivals Oxford.

The Jamaican star's 62 off 69 balls provided the backbone of the visitors' 214 all out after they were put in to bat at the Oxford University Press Sports Ground, before he picked up 4-50 to help restrict the hosts to 163-7.

Following an early break in play for rain, opener Tom Nichols hit a fluent 38 as Horspath reached lunch at 77-3.

Viv Narayan contributed 30 after the resumption, but the innings faltered in the face of an excellent 17.5-over spell of left-arm spin of Alfie Smethurst, who returned career-best figures of 8-52.

Green, who hit three fours and three sixes including the first ball he faced, brought up his second half-century of the campaign, before being stumped by Isaac Dikgale off recent Sussex Academy recruit Smethurst to make it 177-8.

The visitors were boosted, though, by a Home Counties club record tenth-wicket stand of 37 between Asad Rafiq (27) and Jehan Mohammed (13no).

Their partnership surpassed the previous best of an undefeated 31 by Tom Cosford (69no) and Lloyd Belcher (2no) against Finchampstead on July 28, 2018.

Manan Parmar and Julian Laird got Oxford's reply off to a flying start, taking the hosts into tea at 45-0.

But following the interval a fired-up Green bowled with great pace to remove both openers for 23 and Jack Hobbs first ball to make it 57-3.

Dikgale and Brendon Smith held up Horspath, though, taking the score to 103 before the latter was trapped lbw by Josh Richardson for 24.

Skipper Amin Rafiq (2-34) struck twice in the space of three deliveries to remove Henry Golding for 18 and captain Jack Wilkins courtesy of catches by Rayaan Dogar and Nichols.

And with Green returning to claim his fourth victim with the captain catching Barney Carey to make it 144-7, Horspath were in the ascendancy.

But Dikgale finished unbeaten on 50 from 99 balls with four fours and former Horspath player Saqlain Choudhary (13no) saw Oxford safely to the close.

Horspath remain fourth ahead of a return to the Recreation Ground next Saturday when they face second-placed Wokingham, who were knocked off the top in a six-wicket defeat at new leaders Slough.
