Ruff fires up Horspath 2nds' charge

20 Jul 2025

Elliot Ruff slammed 50 off 28 balls as Horspath 2nd preserved their seven-point lead at the top of Cherwell League Division 2 with a convincing 129-run victory over lowly Leighton Buzzard Town in a rain-affected encounter at the Recreation Ground.

With Horspath put in to bat and their innings reduced to 51 overs following rain, before being cut to 43 overs after a further downpour, they posted 180-7 dec from 40 overs.

Dan Corner (46) and Robbie Eason (35) laid the foundations with a stand of 69 for the third wicket, before Ruff stepped up the pace.

His explosive knock included six fours and three sixes, bringing up his half-century with successive maximums in a stand of 68 with Corner before he was caught by Adam McNeil at long on off Lee Selfe's next delivery. Ejaz Ahmad (3-38) was Buzzard's most successful bowler.

Skipper Ryan Hicks's declaration saw Buzzard set a target of 181 from 42 overs, but they were soon in disarray with Will Eason (4-23) tearing through the top order.

Hicks (3-11) then mopped up the tail as the visitors crashed to 51 all out inside 27 overs.

Horspath are at home again next Saturday against eighth-placed Oxford 2nd, whose home game against Tiddington was abandoned due to rain.

Horspath 3rd's eight-match unbeaten run in Division 4B came to an abrupt halt as they crashed to 48 all out and a 172-run defeat at third-placed Stonesfield with skipper Daniel Farrant (8-31) doing the damage.

George Redknapp (49), Andy Oliver (48) and Tim Wyatt (42) took the hosts to 220-7 after being put in to bat despite tidy spells from Erasmus Du Toit (2-34), Azlan Sharif (2-38) and Joe Gibbs (2-43).

But then Horspath's hopes disappeared in a clatter of wickets to Farrant's devastating 14.2-over spell.

Despite the defeat, the side remain second ahead of next Saturday's home game against Oxenford 2nd, who beat Chipping Norton by five wickets.
