Horspath 2nd battle for a draw

14 Jul 2025

Horspath 2nd saw their lead at the top of Cherwell League Division 2 trimmed to seven points following a hard-fought draw at Tiddington.

The table-toppers looked to be on course to return to winning ways as their third-placed hosts slumped to 86-8 after being put in to bat.

However, Horspath were frustrated by an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 71 between Matt Johnson (58no) and Louis Stanfield (31no) as Tiddington rallied to post 157-8.

The visitors then also found runs hard to come by and with wickets falling at regular intervals were held to 141-8.

Will Eason had led the way in Tiddington's innings with 4-31 from a marathon 17-over spell, which included three wickets in five balls to make it 66-6.

With Ed Oakley (2-24) chipping in, Horspath were well on top but were unable to break the partnership of Matt Johnson, whose runs came off 129 balls with five fours and two sixes, and Stanfield.

Horspath's run chase never really got going as skipper Archie Davis (5-34) pegged the visitors back.

Robbie Eason (26) and Dan Corner (21) both got starts, before Will Eason (31no) and captain Ryan Hicks saw the side to the close.

Horspath are back at the Recreation Ground on Saturday when they entertain Leighton Buzzard Town, who drew with Great & Little Tew.
