Record falls as Horspath dominate draw

07 Jul 2025

Horspath produced a brilliant batting display to dominate a rain-affected draw at home to second-placed Datchet in Home Counties Premier Cricket League Division 2.

The side's 285-6 off 46 overs after being put in to bat under grey skies was built on a Home Counties club record opening stand of 139 between Sravan Konidena (74) and Dom O'Connor (55).

That laid the platform for Derval Green to blast 65 off 32 balls to put fourth-placed Horspath into a commanding position.

With Datchet's innings reduced to 39 overs, Horspath entertained thoughts of victory when the visitors slumped to 36-4 before they recovered to close on 138-5.

Rain led to a delayed start and with three further interruptions before lunch, Horspath's innings was reduced to 46 overs.

But it didn't affect Konidena and O'Connor, making his first 1st XI appearance of the season after impressing for the 2nds, as they set the tone in impressive fashion.

Konidena brought up the century partnership with a four through extra cover in the 23rd over, before O'Connor went to his fifty with a glance to the fine leg boundary two balls later.

Konidena quickly followed him to his second half-century of the season by sweeping the first ball of the next over for four.

He celebrated with a six over mid-wicket two balls later and, when he edged the second delivery of the 25th over through third man for four, the pair had matched the club's previous best opening stand of 123 by Jimmy Phillips (81) and Robbie Eason (46) against Amersham in 2023.

Another Konidena boundary to mid-wicket took the opening partnership past that landmark with Horspath going into lunch at 133-0.

However, they had only added six more runs after the resumption when their stand was broken with Konidena miscueing a drive off Sulaiman Akhtart to be caught in the offside by Zain Ashar. His runs came off 86 balls and included 13 fours and a six.

Without addition to the score, O'Connor was caught behind down the legside by Joe Thomas off left-arm spinner Yousef Majid in the next over to make it 139-2. The left-hander's well-made innings last 81 deliveries, hitting eight fours.

Viv Narayan, fresh from representing Oxford University in the drawn Varsity Match against Cambridge at Fenner's, fell lbw to Majid, while Tom Coleman chipped in with 18 before being bowled by Akhtar to leave Horspath 180-4.

Tyron Eyles and Derval Green then went on the attack. Eyles made 31 off 30 balls when he was lbw to Majid, leaving Derval to unleash a barrage of boundaries.

Striking the ball cleanly, he completed his first Home Counties half-century off just 24 balls with two runs down the ground before smashing the next delivery in the same direction for six.

His whirlwind knock, which included five fours and five sixes, ended off the penultimate delivery of the innings when he was stumped by Thomas off Majid (4-100), having added 65 for the sixth wicket with Stephen Green.

There was still time for Josh Richardson to end the innings in style by firing the last ball over long on for six.

It had been a stunning display from Horspath, but with Datchet's innings also reduced the likelihood was always that there wouldn't be enough overs to force a win.

However, with captain Amin Rafiq and his brother, Amin, triggering a top-order collapse with their combination of spin and seam, the hosts were suddenly sensing an outside chance of victory.

Amin made the breakthrough with the last ball before tea by pinning Ashar lbw to leave Datchet 23-1.

And with the first delivery after play resumed, Asad gained an lbw verdict against Rahim Akhtar. Amin bowled Nick Kimber in his next over to make it 28-3 and Asad plunged Datchet deeper into the mire by bowling Jack Laraman.

When Amin bowled Steven Naylor for 15 to make it 66-5, there was still the best part of 20 overs left.

But there was no further joy for Horspath as Thomas (50no) and Samand Khan (38no) shared an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 72 to see Datchet safely to the close.

Amin finished with excellent figures of 3-20 from 13 overs, while Asad picked up 2-52.

Horspath seek to continue their five-match unbeaten run on Saturday when they entertain bottom club Bicester & North Oxford, who lost by 117 runs at home to Thame Town.
