Narayan, Nichols & Asad spark Horspath joy

09 Jun 2025

Brilliant centuries from Viv Narayan and Tom Nichols allied to a devastating spell of bowling by Asad Rafiq saw Horspath crowned Oxfordshire area champions for the fourth time in five years with a 228-run romp against Aston Rowant at the Recreation Ground.

Narayan smashed 137 from 89 balls and Nichols hammered 109 off 98 deliveries to take Horspath to a massive 312-5 off 40 overs after they elected to bat in the regional final, before Asad ripped through the visitors' batting to return stunning figures of 6-21.

It was a ruthless fourth-round display from the hosts, who were winning the area crown for a third successive year and the eighth time in total.

Now Horspath go into the last 32 of the national rounds with the next step on the road to Lord's a home tie against Gloucestershire champions Painswick, who edged past Marshfield by 13 runs, on Sunday, June 22.

On a chilly afternoon at the Rec, Nichols and fellow opener Tyron Eyles got Horspath off to a swift start in front of a 200-plus crowd.

Nichols had just pulled the first of 11 sixes in the innings over square leg when Eyles on 19 got an inside edge to Lewis North and wicket-keeper Jamie Revill took the catch at the second attempt to make it 48-1 in the eighth over.

But then Narayan joined Nichols and the pair proceeded to plunder boundaries in a thrilling second-wicket stand of 231.

Nichols lofted his second six over long off down the ground before Narayan struck consecutive sixes over long on towards the scout hut and clubroom.

The pair were rattling along and Nichols fired another maximum over extra cover before bringing up the 100 in the 14th over with a four through mid-wicket.

Nichols reached his 50 off 47 balls with a cover drive up to the hedge for two before Narayan went big again down towards the clubroom.

He reached his half-century from 41 deliveries by whipping a four through mid-wicket by the nets before Nichols tucked a single into the legside to signal the century partnership.

With the pair well set, Narayan struck another six in the direction of the clubroom before bringing the reverse sweep into play as he racked up three successive fours in the next over.

Nichols kept up the run spree with successive sixes towards the scout hut and the 150-run stand came up in the 27th over when Nichols picked up two runs to fine leg.

Narayan saw a six palmed over the square leg boundary before going to a superb century from 66 balls with a four through mid-wicket.

Nichols followed him to three figures off 90 deliveries two overs later with a neat cut down to third man for a single.

A run by Narayan into the legside two balls later secured the 200-run stand, before their partnership was finally broken when Nichols, who hit eight fours and fives sixes, was bowled by Jacob Eaton with Horspath 269-2.

Narayan followed 11 runs later when he lofted a drive off Eaton to Lewis North at long off after hitting 16 fours and five sixes.

Stephen Green chipped in with a breezy 18 to take Horspath past 300 before falling to the same combination as the hosts chased late runs.

It was left to Asad, batting in partnership with his brother and captain, Amin, to put the seal on the innings with a six off the final delivery over long off towards the scout hut to leave the home supporters in dreamland.

It's believed to be the club's highest score in the competition, while Narayan's 137 is thought to be the club's top individual score and his stand of 231 with Nichols the club's best partnership.

Jacob Eaton emerged from the run feast with creditable figures of 4-59 for Rowant.

Asad then took centre stage with his pace blowing away Rowant's top order.

He made the breakthrough with his sixth delivery when Josh Richardson claimed a good catch at mid-off to dismiss Chris North before he bowled Revill, who top-scored with 12, and then made it 25-3 when Will Eason held an edge from Finley Little at first slip.

Without addition to the score, Eason plunged Rowant deeper into trouble when Andrew McGeorge sent a leading edge to Green at point.

Asad then had Sasha Barras caught by Nichols before completing his five-wicket haul when Liam Hester edged into George Crawford's gloves.

And the Horspath paceman made it six of the best with Ben Knowler also being caught behind to end his eight-over spell with brilliant figures.

Liam Turnbull came into the attack to bowl promising 13-year-old Kaian Eaton, before having captain Carrick Dunbar caught by Green at point.

Jehan Mohammed wrapped up an emphatic victory when he trapped Jacob Eaton lbw with Rowant, whose meagre total was boosted by 30 extras, shot out off 22.5 overs.

Turnbull finished with 2-7, while Mohammed (1-19) and Eason (1-32) were the other wicket-takers.

It was a resounding victory for Horspath, who will go into the national rounds full of confidence while at the same time knowing stiffer tests lie ahead.
