Horspath pipped in final pre-season encounter

05 May 2025

Horspath completed their build-up to a new Home Counties Premier Cricket League campaign with a one-wicket defeat in a friendly at Tring Park.

Having been restricted to 191 all out after electing to bat, the visitors reduced Tring to 114-8.

But, with Horspath using seven bowlers, Sam Shearman (53) and skipper Rory Criddle (19no) put on 72 for the ninth wicket to steer the hosts to the brink of victory, which they secured at 195-9.

Stephen Green (43) and Tom Coleman (40) were among the runs for Horspath after opener Sravan Konidena made 30.

However, the visitors were struggling at 131-8 with Criddle (4-46) the chief destroyer, before acting skipper Will Eason (38no) and Jehan Mohammed (11) shared a stand of 60 for the ninth wicket.

Horspath's bowlers then worked their way through the Tring order with an excellent spell from new signing Liam Turnbull, who picked up 4-23 off 10 overs, well supported by Mohammed (1-30).

Shearman's arrival turned the tide in Tring's favour with his runs coming off 55 balls and including eight fours and a six, before Eason (2-30) returned to remove him.

Criddle remained, though, to see the Thames Valley League Division 1 side over the line.

Horspath's opening HCPCL Division 2 fixture is at Bicester & North Oxford on Saturday, before the side are away to Shipton-under-Wychwood in the Voneus Village Cup second round on Sunday.

Dan Corner and Tejas Anand struck half-centuries as Horspath 2nd wrapped up their pre-season friendlies with an 89-run win over Tring Park 2nd at the Recreation Ground.

Corner hit 75 off 99 balls, while Anand hammered 62 from 55 deliveries to set the hosts on the way to a commanding 281-5 after they chose to bat in the 45-over encounter.

The pair shared a second-wicket stand of 101 with Anand hitting 13 fours before their partnership ended.

Corner contributed 12 boundaries, before acting skipper Robbie Eason (43no) and Jason Cardy (37) put on 70 for the fifth wicket to take Horspath to their final total.

The visitors were then held in check by an accurate home attack, replying with 192-6.

New recruit Ahmed Raza (2-43) was Horspath's most successful bowler, while there were also tidy spells from Joe Gibbs (1-20) and Ed Oakley (1-25).

Stephen Dutch (35), Tejas Patel (31) and Mark Bater (30) were Tring's main contributors.

Horspath 2nd open their Cherwell League Division 2 campaign at home to Tiddington on Saturday.

Horspath 3rd are away to Dorchester-on-Thames in Division 4B and Horspath 4th entertain Stokenchurch 2nd in Division 6C.
