Horspath's Charity Day a big success

27 Aug 2024

It was all about putting the fun into fundraising as Horspath staged a Charity Tape Ball Cricket Six-A-Side Competition at the Recreation Ground.

Ten teams consisting of men's and women's players, juniors, friends and supporters took part in Sunday's event with £1,500 raised so far in aid of Thames Valley Air Ambulance.

TVAA was the chosen charity as the club lost two prominent members earlier this year in Max Eason and Tommy Pritchard, who were attended by medical services.

With the sides wearing coloured shirts generously donated by Newtrim UK and two matches running alongside each other throughout the day on the main ground, the Rec was a hive of activity.

Music accompanied the action with sixes and wickets galore as tape balls - tennis balls wrapped in electrical tape - flew to all parts in front of a good-sized crowd with villagers out in force to support the event.

While the focus was on fun and raising money, the teams competed in two sections with the Greens, led by Lukas Yendole, topping Group A, after a bold showing from the Orange side, made up of brothers Ben and Adam Thompson's families.

Meanwhile, it took a super over to decide Group B as the Grey team, with Jamie Hicks at the helm, pipped Stephen Green's Sky Blues by one run after they had finished with three wins apiece.

An exciting final then saw the Green team of Lukas, Rayaan Dogar, Munaza Dogar, Tracey Isaac, Hamza Chaudhary and Faisal Khan, defeat Jamie's Greys, who consisted of Christopher Hofen, Kai Davies, Vicky Staples, Aarav Jaginani and James Green.

Sandra Eason presented the cup and medals to the winners and runners-up, while TVAA's Head of Community & Events Ruth Dunkin was in attendance to thank the club for holding the event.

A successful day was completed by WipeOut providing the live music in the evening.

Thanks go to all the players who took part and those who helped in organising the event headed by Diddy and his assistants Stuart Bishop, Russell Smith and Jen Carter.

The club are also indebted to Robbie Eason for preparing the pitches, and the team of umpires led by Bob Chamberlain, Dennis Whittaker, Pete Cranston and Steve Weaving plus scorer Simon Goves.

Thanks also to Fas Dogar for running the BBQ and all the bar staff together with everyone who donated prizes for the raffle, which was a great success with Amanda Cummings's input.

With the auction held over to a future function, it's hoped the final total raised for TVAA will be boosted further.
