High fives for Asad in Horspath win

21 Jul 2024

Asad Rafiq produced a classic fast bowler's display to take 5-39 and set Cherwell League Division 1 leaders Horspath up for a four-wicket win over Banbury 2nd at the Recreation Ground.

The Horspath quickie picked up the first three wickets in his opening 10-over spell to reduce the visitors to 57-3 after they had elected to bat.

Spinners Amin Rafiq, who ended captain James Mokler's resistance for 39, and Josh Richardson held Banbury in check with a wicket apiece, before Viv Narayan (2-21) accepted caught and bowled chances from Brad Taylor (35) and Ben Miller (28).

Asad then returned to bowl the last two batsman and complete his five-wicket haul from 13.4 overs with Banbury 156 all out.

Hussaan Ahmed (40) and Tom Coleman (28) provided a solid base for Horspath's run chase.

Lachlan Biggs (25) shared a third-wicket stand of 50 with Ahmad, before the pair fell in quick succession to leave the hosts 100-4.

With the visitors striking twice more, it was left to Josh Richardson (27no) and skipper Will Eason (23no) to see Horspath home at 157-6. Taylor and Harvey Julyan both returned figures of 2-28 for Banbury.

The victory maintained Horspath's unbeaten record with the side now 47 points clear of Didcot ahead of next Saturday's home game against bottom club Westbury.

Tyron Eyles starred with bat and ball as Horspath 2nd got back to winning ways with a four-wicket victory in a low-scoring encounter at third-placed Tiddington in Division 2.

The all-rounder took 3-36 with his haul including top-scorer Archie Davis (24) as Tiddington were bowled out for 96 on a slow-paced pitch after being put in to bat.

Left-arm spinner Sam Leslie (3-13) and Nishi Ranasinghe (2-22) provided good support.

Horspath stumbled to 14-2 in reply, but Eyles (41) then joined opener Sheriyar Ahmed (25) to get the visitors back on track with the win secured at 97-6 in the 42nd over.

The success sees Horspath move up to fifth place ahead of Saturday's trip to bottom side Buckingham Town 2nd.
