Horspath go for Village Cup glory

07 Jun 2024

Horspath bid to be crowned Oxfordshire area champions in the Voneus Village Cup for the third time in four years when the side take on Oxford Downs in the county final at Standlake on Sunday (1pm).

It's a repeat of last year's hard-fought semi-final when Horspath emerged victors by 46 runs before going on to claim the regional crown with a thrilling one-wicket win off the last ball at Tiddington.

This time, Horspath, who were also Oxon winners in 2021 ending a 42-year wait to be county champions, have reached the decider by powering past Minster Lovell and Shipton-under-Wychwood with a walkover against Stanton Harcourt sandwiched in between.

Downs, the 2022 Oxon champions, have made similar progress, defeating Cropredy by 46 runs, before being handed a walkover by Great & Little Tew and then sweeping aside Langford by 83 runs.

The prize for the winners is a home tie in the national rounds on June 23 against either White Waltham or Peppard Stoke Row, who contest the Berkshire final.

All supporters are welcome.

Before Sunday, Horspath have a full Cherwell League programme tomorrow.

The 1st XI will look to maintain their 100 per cent record at the top of Cherwell League Division 1, while the 2nd XI face Witney Swifts at the Recreation Ground.

The 3rd XI are at home to Great Brickhill 2nd, and the 4th XI visit Wootton & Boars Hill.
