Ahmad and Richardson star for Horspath

21 May 2024

Hussaan Ahmad and Josh Richardson hit determined half-centuries as Horspath made it two wins out of two in Cherwell League Division 1 with a 36-run victory over Banbury 2nd at White Post Road.
Ahmad made 68 off 101 balls and Richardson racked up 61 from 93 deliveries to set the visitors up for 220-7 after they were put in to bat.
Horspath were in early trouble at 25-2 with former Horspath left-arm seamer Liam Manley (2-35) doing the damage.
But Ahmad, who hit seven fours, and Lachlan Biggs (31) rebuilt the innings with a stand of 52, before the former was joined by Richardson, who hammered five fours and a six, to put on 97 for the fourth wicket.
Vivek Narayan chipped in with a handy 19 late on as Horspath posted a challenging total.
Asad Rafiq then put Banbury's run chase on the back foot by striking twice to reduce the hosts to 26-2.
With Tyron Eyles and Jehan Mohammed picking up a wicket apiece to make it 68-4, Horspath remained in charge.
Skipper Justin Lambden (47) and Mike Jones (50) kept Banbury's hopes alive, but with both falling to Narayan (3-34), the hosts slumped to 184 all out.
Horspath are away to Westbury next Saturday, before visiting Shipton-under-Wychwood in the Oxfordshire area semi-final of the Voneus Village Cup on Sunday.
Horspath 2nd's batsmen were shackled by an accurate Tiddington attack as they slipped to a three-wicket defeat in Division 2 at the Recreation Ground.
The hosts were bowled out for 153 after being inserted. Dan Corner (28) and opener Jimmy Phillips (26) laid the foundations for significant contributions but were unable to go on as Chris Goodman (3-27) and Bradley Rose (2-22) held sway for the visitors.
With Horspath 104-7, it was only handy knocks from Sam Leslie (19) and Joval Calix (18), which took the side to their final total.
Tiddington reached 65-1 with opener Peter King (39) leading the way, but then skipper Ryan Hicks (3-28) and fellow spinners Calix (2-22) and Leslie, who picked up 1-13 in an excellent 10-over spell, sparked a collapse.
Five wickets went down for 12 runs as the visitors slumped to 77-6, leaving Horspath sensing victory.
Goodman and Jacob Davis moved the score on to 115, before the former became Hicks's third victim and the game was still in the balance.
But then Davis (28no) and Rose (17no) saw the visitors home at 158-7, with victory sealed by a big six down the ground over mid-wicket from Davis with nine balls to spare.
The 2nd XI are at home again next Saturday against Buckingham Town 2nd.
Dan Todd's fluent knock of 69 proved in vain as Horspath 3rd went down by 60 runs in a high-scoring encounter at Tetsworth in Division 3A.
Chasing a formidable 298 all out after inserting the hosts, Horspath were in the hunt with Todd, whose runs came off 70 balls and included six fours and two sixes, sharing a second-wicket stand of 92 with Azlan Sharif (44).
But after they were parted the visitors were unable to maintain the momentum and were eventually bowled out for 238, with the total boosted by 55 extras.
Kiran Ramji (62) had earlier led the way in Tetsworth's run spree, with Chintan Devji (55), Ronal Parsotamo (50) and opener Rajesh Naggi (40) also on song. Tom Smith (3-62) was Horspath's chief wicket-taker.
Meanwhile, the side's Airey Cup defence proved short-lived with an eight-wicket defeat at Witney Mills in the round of 16 on Sunday.
Having chosen to bat, Horspath were restricted to 139-9 off 40 overs with only Sharif (35) and Lukas Yendole (28) making any impression as Sam Haselgrove (5-20) did the damage.
Julius Leslie and Ed Oakley struck early in the Mills' innings, but there was no further success for Horspath as Darren Clark (65no) and Matthew McGrady (50no) steered the hosts to victory at 143-2 with 16.1 overs to spare.
Horspath 4th found it tough going again as they slid to a 140-run defeat at home to Radley in Division 5C.
The side's 10 men performed well with the ball to bowl Radley out for 187 after putting them in to bat.
Oakley picked up 3-18, while Nkululeko Gumpo took his first league wickets with 3-23 in a tidy nine-over spell, and Nahim Khatib (1-31) also struck on debut. Sahan Hettiarachchi (37) top-scored for the visitors.
But then Horspath collapsed to 47 all out with Nayyer Salim (3-10) and Ali Malik (3-14) the chief destroyers.
The 4th XI are away to early leaders Oxenford 2nd next Saturday.
