Horspath open Cherwell campaign with win

13 May 2024

Horspath made a solid start to their Cherwell League Division 1 campaign with a 52-run win over Didcot at the Recreation Ground.
The hosts posted 209 all out after being put in to bat with Josh Richardson (37) top-scoring.
With the visitors, led by Jordan Morrison (3-28) and Cory Cater (3-43), taking wickets at regular intervals, Horspath were held in check before being bowled out in the last over.
Jehan Mohammed chipped in with an unbeaten 21 down the order to take the home side to their final total.
Horspath's bowlers then took charge as Didcot's run chase never really got going.
Skipper Will Eason and Asad Rafiq, on his return league debut, struck an early blow apiece to reduce the visitors to 14-2, before Mohammed (4-23) ripped the heart out of the Didcot batting.
He was well supported by leg-spinner Richardson, with his 2-24 including top-scorer Rob Walsh (29).
It was only late resistance from Morrison (26) which saw Didcot to the close at 157-9 with their total boosted by 29 wides.
Horspath hit the road next Saturday when they face Banbury 2nd, who kicked off with a massive 231-run win at Cumnor.
Robbie Eason made 72, but it couldn't prevent Horspath 2nd falling to a three-wicket defeat at Oxford Downs 2nd in Division 2.
His patient knock set the visitors on the way to 176-9 after they were put in to bat.
He shared a second-wicket stand of 52 with opener Jimmy Phillips (28), before putting on 65 for the fifth wicket with Dan Corner, who made a handy 33 on his league debut.
But after they were parted the lower order were unable to provide any late momentum and Eason was the last wicket to fall with his runs coming off 139 balls and including seven fours and a six.
Gus Watts (4-28) led the way for Downs, while Alex Ling (2-24) and Ethan Davie (2-38) were also among the wickets after Wasim Mehmood took 1-18 from his 10 overs.
Horspath's bowlers made the home side work hard for the runs with Erasmus du Toit (2-25) producing a fine opening spell.
Opener Curtly Slatter made 30 before being caught and bowled by skipper Ryan Hicks (1-28) to make it 52-3.
But then Davie (69no) and James Lauder (34) swung the game Downs's way with a fourth-wicket stand of 79, before the latter was run out by du Toit.
Horspath's hopes were lifted further as Joval Calix (2-46) took two wickets and left-arm spinner Sam Leslie (1-26) also claimed a victim on his league debut to make it 148-7.
But Davie, accompanied by Mehmood (14no), stood firm to guide Downs home at 179-7 with nine balls to spare. Davie faced 101 deliveries, hitting seven fours and two sixes.
The 2nd XI are at home to Tiddington, who beat Great & Little Tew by six wickets in their opener, next weekend.
Opener Jonty Hedges's superb 84 proved in vain as Horspath 3rd went down by 23 runs at home to Long Marston in Division 3A.
Chasing the visitors posted 246-6 - which included a brilliant 134 from Luan Liebenberg - after putting them in to bat, Horspath were well placed at 152-1.
However, after Hedges's 134-ball knock, which included seven fours and a six, came to an end, Horspath's run chase petered out.
He dominated a first-wicket stand of 82 with new signing Daniel d'Hotman (16), before putting on 70 for the second wicket with Azlan Sharif (41).
New captain Mohson Rana smashed 30 off 15 balls, before the home side fell short on 223-6.
Earlier, Liebenberg propelled the visitors to an imposing total single-handedly, hitting 13 fours and five sixes in his 124-ball knock. Joe Gibbs (3-28) was the pick of the home attack.
Horspath are away to Tetsworth next Saturday, before opening the defence of their Airey Cup crown at Witney Mills in the round of 16 on Sunday.
Horspath 4th suffered a 203-run defeat at Wantage & Grove in Division 5C.
The home side made 236-6 with opener Colin Mercer (72) setting the standard, before skipper Jonny Chitty (50) and David Summerbee (50no) took Wantage to their final total.
Ed Oakley (2-25) and Adrian Manger (2-45) were among the wickets for 10-man Horspath.
The visitors then crashed to 33 all out with James Mabbett (3-3) and Mikey Mullins (3-11) the chief destroyers.
Horspath are at home to Radley, who lost to Abingdon Vale 2nd by six wickets, next Saturday.
