Healey and Hofen shine in Horspath 2nd's win

22 Aug 2023

PETE Healey and Christopher Hofen led the way with half-centuries in Horspath 2nd's resounding 108-run win over already-relegated Buckingham Town 2nd in Cherwell League Division 1 at the Recreation Ground.
Healey creamed an unbeaten 68 off 55 balls after opener Hofen made 60 from 94 deliveries as Horspath rattled up 268-4 off 50 overs after being put in to bat.
Buckingham, who have now lost all 16 of their games this season, then subsided to 163 all out with Tyrone Eyles (4-18) the chief destroyer.
Hofen and stand-in skipper Dominic O'Connor (25) laid the base for Horspath's run spree with an opening stand of 51.
Hussaan Ahmad (42) put on 93 with Hofen for the second wicket, with the 17-year-old opener's second fifty of the season including six fours and one six.
Healey then took centre stage to smash seven fours and three sixes in his third half-century of the campaign.
He ensured the innings finished with a flourish in partnership with Tyrone Eyles, who blasted an unbeaten 32 off 15 balls.
Opener Zepha Arinaite got Buckingham's reply off to a flying start by hammering 53 from 33 deliveries with nine fours and a six.
He put on 81 for the first wicket with Thomas Woodham (33), before falling to Eyles, who ripped through the top order with his 10-over spell also including five maidens as well as four wickets.
Spinners Ahmad (2-12) and Joval Calix (2-25) made sure there was no way back for Buckingham, while Ed Oakley took four catches and Hofen struck with a direct hit for a run out.
The win moves Horspath back up to third spot ahead of Saturday's home game against fourth-placed Cropredy.
Mark Skelton blasted an unbeaten 73 as Horspath 3rd bounced back to winning ways with an emphatic seven-wicket victory at third-placed Westcott in Division 3A.
Skipper Ryan Hicks (4-19) led the way as the visitors restricted Westcott to 134-9 after putting them in to bat.
Opener Nick Raynor made 37, but with Jason Cardy taking 2-23 from his 10 overs and Dougal Main chipping in with 2-22 the home side were held firmly in check.
Horspath then lost early wickets, but Skelton hammered ten fours and three sixes in his 86-ball knock to steer Horspath to 139-3 with good support from Lukas Yendole (27no).
The win keeps Horspath in seventh place ahead of Saturday's home game against Oxenford, before they face Banbury 3rd in the Airey Cup final at Didcot on Bank Holiday Monday, August 28.
