Turner brothers shine in Horspath 3rd's loss

17 Jul 2023

BROTHERS Alfie and Charlie Turner starred with a half-century and a five-wicket haul respectively - but it couldn't save Horspath 3rd from a one-wicket defeat in an exciting finish at Great Brickhill 2nd in Cherwell League Division 3A.
Alfie made 51 off 72 balls with four fours and a six as the visitors were bowled out for 161 after electing to bat.
He put on 68 for the fifth wicket with Charlie (26) after Horspath had been 49-4, but then only Mohson Rana (27no) held up the hosts as Ethan Viljoen (3-18), Hugo Jackson (3-30) and Julian Blackwell (3-55) shared the wickets.
Charlie then took 5-35 in Brickhill's innings before the hosts scraped home at 163-9.
He ripped through the top order with the first three wickets and at 48-5 the visitors were on top, but then Dylan Cilliers (51) and Arran Aris (43) put on a crucial 83 for the sixth wicket.
With Brickhill's innings mirroring that of Horspath's, the hosts faltered as Charlie returned to the attack to complete his five-wicket haul and return league-best figures, bettering his 5-61 for Horspath 4th at home to Aston Rowant 4th in 2019.
Jason Cardy (2-55) also chipped in, before Brickhill's last pair saw their side over the line.
Horspath 4th excelled in the field to keep up their Division 6A title challenge with a seven-wicket win at home to Thame Town 3rd.
The second-placed hosts bowled out the visitors for 110 after putting them in to bat in blustery conditions.
Stuart Berry, with 2-15 from as many overs, and Adrian Manger reduced Thame to 29-3, before Charlie Anderson (43) and Zac Harris (27) put on 51 for the fourth wicket.
But after their stand was broken by Joe Gibbs (2-24), the rest of the order fell swiftly to Robin Pykett (3-25) and Sammy Parker (2-5) as skipper Craig Wharton took three catches behind the stumps.
Opener Hadi Ali (32) set the hosts on the way to their target, before Azlan Sharif (31no) and Tom Smith (28no) saw Horspath home at 112-3 in the 29th over with an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 61.
The win sets the side up for their trip to leaders Watlington on Saturday, before they entertain Risinghurst 2nd in the Steve Dixon Memorial Cup semi-final on Sunday.
