Horspath set for Village Cup trip to Cornwall

29 Jun 2023

HORSPATH are back on the road to Lord's on Sunday when their Voneus Village Cup adventure takes the club on a near 500-mile round trip for a sixth-round tie at Grampound Road, near St Austell, in Cornwall.
Will Eason's side make the journey for the last-16 contest on the back of a scintillating 76-run win at home to Somerset side Wembdon in round five.
That success, built on a brilliant 171-run unbroken fifth-wicket partnership between Robbie Eason (102no) and Max Smith (80no), saw the club equal the furthest they have gone in the competition, having reached this stage before going out to Ynysygerwn in 1979.
It came after Horspath had been crowned Oxfordshire Group winners for the second time in three years with Josh Richardson hitting the last ball for six to snatch a thrilling one-wicket win at Tiddington.
That followed wins at Oxford Downs, at home to Shipton-under-Wychwood and at the Baldons where the club began their quest back in April.
Grampound Road, who promise a warm welcome with Cornish pasties cooked to order, came through the last 32 with a nail-biting two-wicket win at Sully Spartans (Glamorgan & Gwent).
The Roadies bowled out their Cardiff-based opponents for 192 after putting them in to bat with spinner Martin Roberts taking 5-39 and Lewis Sanders 3-22.
Opener Harry Gregory (44) and Tom Orpe (33) set Grampound Road on the way with a 65-run second-wicket stand before they eventually scrambled home with four balls to spare.
Grampound Road have won the Devon & Cornwall Group in successive seasons, triumphing this year with a 65-run victory at home to Roche Old Boys with skipper David Neville taking 4-8.
That triumph came after a five-wicket win at Mount Ambrose, a 205-run home victory over Constantine and a walkover against Yelverton Bohemians.
They also reached this stage last year only to be bowled out for 57 in a nine-wicket defeat by eventual runners-up Calmore Sports Club (Hampshire).
Much like Horspath, Grampound Road's Sunday best has deserted them on a Saturday as they sit in 12th at the foot of Cornwall League Division 1, which is one level below the top flight in the county.
Horspath have been spurred on in their Village Cup campaign by terrific support led by the 'Barmy Army' and the club are hoping to have a good following in Cornwall. A coach has been organised with spaces still available. Contact Will Eason for details.
The reward for the winners is a home tie against Hook & Newnham Basics (Hampshire) or 1988 and 1990 champions Goatacre (Dorset & Wiltshire).
Before Sunday, Horspath have an important Home Counties Premier League Division 2 game at Thame Town on Saturday.
The 2nd XI take on Tiddington at the Recreation Ground, while the 3rd XI are at home to Bletchley Town and the 4th XI visit Bletchley Town 2nd.
