Horspath's bowlers combine for T20 triumph

28 Jun 2023

A FINE bowling and fielding display saw Horspath make it two wins out of two in the Hartwell Senior Cup with an 11-run victory at home to Cumnor in a low-scoring encounter.
Horspath's 105-9 looked well below-par in the Pool 1 T20 game after they had elected to bat under overcast skies, but the home side's bowlers then rose to the occasion to restrict Cumnor to 94-7.
Minhaj Jalill followed up his half-century in the opening win at Challow & Childrey last week by hitting 32 off 34 balls as Horspath found runs hard to come by.
And, after he fell to a low catch at long on off Adam Cook in the 15th over to make it 78-4, it was only Will Hawtin's 16 off 11 deliveries which saw Horspath top three figures.
Rory Hipwell took 3-27 with Patrick Knightley (2-15) and Cook (2-21) also among the wickets, while former Horspath paceman Asad Rafiq returned figures of 1-14 from his four overs.
However, Horspath's bowlers proceeded to exact a grip on Cumnor's top order with Tyrone Eyles, skipper Amin Rafiq, Jalill and Hussaan Ahmad all playing their part.
The visitors were 30-2 at halfway and with Josh Richardson joining the attack, Hawtin added to an earlier catch by stumping ex-Horspath players Asad Rafiq and Graham Beer as Cumnor lost five wickets for two runs to slump to 50-7.
Hipwell then played the innings of the night to give Cumnor an outside chance by smashing an unbeaten 37 off 19 balls with four fours and two sixes.
However, with 23 needed for victory off the last over - bowled by Amin Rafiq - Horspath had enough in hand to secure the points.
Jalill (1-10) was the pick of the home attack, with the other wickets falling to Ahmad (2-23), Richardson (2-24), Rafiq (1-15) and Eyles (1-20).
The win puts Horspath in pole position in Pool 1 ahead of next Tuesday's game at home to Oxford.
