Horspath 2nd denied in thrilling finish
30 May 2023
HORSPATH 2nd came agonisingly close to pulling victory out of the fire before going down to a one-wicket defeat at home to Didcot in a Cherwell League Division 1 thriller.
Having posted 251-9 after being put in to bat, the hosts reduced Didcot to 36-4 before Karan Singh hit a brilliant century as the visitors looked set to cruise home.
However, when he was among a late flurry of wickets, Horspath were suddenly in with a chance of recording back-to-back wins.
But Didcot captain Ceri Holmes, the former Horspath player, kept his cool to hit an unbeaten 15 and steer his side home at 254-9 with 4.5 overs to spare.
A rollercoaster of a match had earlier seen the home side in trouble at 71-5, but Dominic O'Connor stood firm to make 80 off 125 balls with 11 fours.
He shared a seventh-wicket stand of 91 with new recruit Anoop Reddy, who hit a maiden league half-century in his first innings.
Reddy finished unbeaten on 50 from 57 deliveries with seven fours, while tailender Erasmus Du Toit weighed in with a handy 20 as Will Spratt took 3-30.
Du Toit (3-56) and Ed Oakley (2-53) did the early damage in Didcot's innings to put Horspath on top, before Singh took centre stage.
He smashed 12 fours and six sixes as he raced to 122 off 90 balls, dominating stands of 103 and 50 for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively with Daniel Hall (33) and Alexander Brogan.
Horspath fought back with Singh one of two wickets for Tyrone Eyles, but it wasn't quite enough.
