Horspath into Oxon final of Village Cup
22 May 2023
HORSPATH marched on in the Voneus Village Cup with a hard-fought 46-run victory at Oxford Downs in the Oxfordshire semi-final.
Will Eason's side are now away to Tiddington - who beat Aston Rowant by 80 runs - in the county final on June 4.
The third-round tie at Downs saw a meeting between the last two Oxon Group winners and Horspath, who claimed the county crown in 2021, posted 176-9 from their 40 overs after electing to bat.
The visitors recovered from being reduced to 15-2 by the reigning county champions with Elliot Ruff (44) and Robbie Eason (38) batting sensibly to turn the innings round with a stand of 85 for the third wicket.
After they both fell in quick succession, Stephen Green (28) kept the scoreboard ticking before Josh Richardson weighed in with a handy 19 to ensure Horspath posted a challenging total
Lawrence Brock (3-27) and Wasim Mehmood (3-32) were well supported by some good catches for Downs.
Horspath then got stuck into the Downs' batting with the home side collapsing to 33-5 as Will Eason led the charge with 2-10 from his eight overs.
Alex Ling (30) and Frankie Crouch (28) kept the home side's hopes alive, but when the former was run out after suffering a hamstring injury, Horspath reasserted their grip with Tyrone Eyles taking 3-28, while Amin Rafiq returned fine figures of 1-16 from his eight overs.
Mehmood (21) provided late resistance, but victory was secured when he was caught at long on by Richardson off Subhan Javaid to leave Downs 130 all out.
