Vintage Oakley sparks Horspath 2nd's win

22 May 2023

ED Oakley produced a vintage spell of 5-21 as Horspath 2nd belatedly got their season under way with an excellent six-wicket win at Aston Rowant 2nd on their first game back in Cherwell League Division 1 for six years.
Having had their first two games abandoned following bad weather, last season's Division 2 champions looked to face a tough assignment as they made the trip to the top flight's 2022 runners-up.
But with Oakley, whose bowling like a good red wine seems to get better with age, destroying the top order they dismissed the hosts for 126 after putting them in to bat.
He took the first four wickets to fall, before Mark Skelton removed opener Will Sutcliffe for 42 to leave Rowant 65-5.
Oakley struck again without addition to the score to complete his five-wicket haul, and with Skelton (3-36) providing good support there was no way back for the home side. Tyrone Eyles also claimed a victim, and there was a wicket on debut for Anoop Reddy.
Captain Joey Todd (44) and Christopher Hofen (40) then shared an opening stand of 94 to set Horspath on the way to victory, with Pete Healey (22no) seeing the side over the line at 129-4 off 25.5 overs.
Horspath 3rd, who also saw their opening two games cancelled, suffered an eight-wicket defeat at Wolverton Town in Division 3A.
The visitors were bowled out for 117 after being put in to bat, losing wickets at regular intervals as tailender Andy Cummings top-scored with 24. Haris Qureshi and Glenn Dickinson picked up three wickets apiece.
Ahmed Mujtba (45no) and Hasnat Tanveer (29no) then saw Wolverton home at 119-2 after Cummings and skipper Ryan Hicks each took a wicket.
