Horspath 2nd set seal on title triumph

05 Sep 2022

STEPHEN Green and Pete Healey hit half-centuries as Horspath 2nd sealed their Cherwell League Division 2 title triumph with a 15-run win at Shipton-under-Wychwood.
Having been crowned champions a week earlier, the side again showed their battling qualities to post 234 all out after choosing to bat.
Opener Christopher Hofen (39) and acting skipper Joey Todd (25) put on 55 for the first wicket before both fell to Greg Woods (2-30).
Healey provided the impetus in the middle order with 51 from 58 balls, which included five fours and two sixes, before Green steered Horspath to their final total.
He finished unbeaten on 53 from 89 deliveries with six fours as the innings ended in the 48th over with the last three wickets going down for one run.
Left-arm spinner Shaun Miller took 3-43 and Callum Taylor 3-59, while Rob Panting picked up 1-25 from his 10 overs.
Horspath looked up against it on more than one occasion in the Shipton innings, but devastating spells from Dougal Main (4-29) and Subhan Javaid (4-39) saw the home side crash to 219 all out.
Shipton were 94-1 as skipper Tim Senior (43) and Freddie Norridge (37) shared a second-wicket stand of 76, before Charlie Miller (48) and Taylor (28) took the hosts to 183-3 with a partnership of 68 for the fourth wicket.
But then Main and Javaid combined to spark an almighty collapse as Shipton lost their last seven wickets for 36 runs.
The victory saw Horspath end a memorable season 41 points clear of runners-up Buckingham Town 2nd.
