Match report Ward and Shahbaz Ali star as Horspath break their duck

Teenage opener Harrison Ward and experienced all-rounder Shahbaz Ali hit half-centuries as Horspath recorded their first win in Division 1 with a six-wicket victory at home to Burnham.

Chasing 212 after putting Burnham in to bat, Horspath suffered a blow when Adam Price was out for nought.

But Ward and Jimmy Phillips put on 98 for the second wicket, before the latter was stumped off left-arm spinner Azhar Ali to make it 106-2.

Ward, showing excellent technique and application for a 15-year-old, reached his first league half-century.

His patient 101-ball knock, which included six fours, came to an end when he holed out at long on off Ali for 52, a ball after being dropped.

He was replaced by the master finisher Shahbaz, who made an unbeaten 50 off 51 balls, with six fours and a six.

The left-hander found willing allies in Steve Green and Adam Mould, who scored an unbeaten 25, to steer Horspath home with 2.1 overs to spare.

Earlier, Burnham had slumped to 2-2, with Price bowling Sajid Ali and then providing debutant wicket-keeper Andy Roberts with a first victim when Aftab Khan nicked behind, both for ducks.

They were still in trouble at 50-5 after Price (3-30) claimed the wicket of Faisal Miraj and Will Eason dismissed Harveer Gandam and Fahad Raja.

However, Raja Rehman hit 64 off 57 balls with six sixes Horspath then had Burnham 155-9, but Azhar Ali (31) and Muddassar Nawaz (28no) put on 57 for the last wicket, Shahbaz finishing with 3-43.
