Horspath sign off pre-season with victory
07 May 2024
Horspath completed their build-up to the new Cherwell League campaign with a 28-run win at Boyne Hill in their final pre-season friendly.
Opener Sheriyar Ahmed (41) top-scored as Horspath posted 151 all out after electing to bat with Hussaan Ahmad and Vivek Narayan making handy contributions of 25 apiece.
Tharushan Iddamalgoda (3-15) and Oliver West (3-30) were the chief wicket-takers for the Thames Valley League Division 1 club.
Horspath, who included Australian overseas wicketkeeper/batsman Lachlan Biggs and paceman Asad Rafiq following his return from Cumnor, then bowled out Boyne Hill for 123.
Narayan (4-10) mopped up the tail after Amin Rafiq picked up 2-27 including opener James Hammerton (38) as the hosts caved in from 65-1.
Now Horspath can look forward to their opening Division 1 game at home to Didcot on Saturday.
Dougal Main starred with 78 as Horspath 2nd triumphed by 33 runs in their last friendly at Sandford St Martin.
He smashed five fours and five sixes in his 58-ball knock to steer the visitors to 169-9 off 40 overs after they chose to bat.
Main shared a fourth-wicket stand of 69 with Stephen Green (25) as Chris Thompson (4-20) and Muhammad Saqib (3-30) did the damage for Sandford.
Horspath's bowlers then restricted Sandford to 136-8 with Jason Cardy picking up three wickets.
The 2nd XI start their Division 2 campaign at Oxford Downs 2nd on Saturday.
Luke Heritage took 5-20 but it couldn't save Horspath 4th from a two-wicket defeat against Banbury 4th in a low-scoring friendly at the Recreation Ground.
The home side were shot out for 56 with Tom Spokes (4-12) and Joseph Wetherill (3-3) the chief destroyers.
However, Banbury then collapsed from 25-0 as Heritage made inroads into their batting.
With debutant Julius Leslie picking up 2-6, the game was in the balance before the visitors' ninth-wicket pair added 10 runs to clinch victory at 58-8.
The 3rd XI are at home to Long Marston in Division 3A on Saturday, while the 4th XI visit Wantage & Grove.
The 4th XI and any supporters planning to travel to Wantage should note that the A34 southbound is closed between Milton and Chieveley for resurfacing from Friday, May 10 (9pm) to Monday, May 13 (6am).
Lengthy delays can be expected in the area with National Highways advising additional time should be allowed for journeys.
Players travelling to Horspath should also note that the A40 westbound is closed between the M40 services slip road and Thornhill Park & Ride for resurfacing from Saturday, May 11 (5am) to Tuesday, May 14 (6pm) each day.
