Horspath away to Witney Mills in Airey Cup

21 Apr 2024

Horspath 3rd will open the defence of their Airey Cup crown with a trip to Witney Mills in the round of 16 on Sunday, May 19.
The side, who lifted the trophy with a spectacular eight-wicket win over Banbury 3rd in the final at Didcot last year, are among 18 teams in the competition for Cherwell League Tier 3 and 4 teams this season.
Charlie Turner was the man-of-the-match with a brilliant 80 off 38 balls as Horspath chased down Banbury's 154-9 with a massive 17 overs to spare on August Bank Holiday Monday.
The stunning success saw Horspath lift the cup for the first time in its current format, but the ninth time in total with the previous one being in 1991 when the club left the Oxfordshire Cricket Association (OCA) to join the Trinity League.
Meanwhile, Horspath 4th have been drawn away to the winners of holders Risinghurst and Kidlington in the Telegraph Cup quarter-finals.
The side, who captured the Steve Dixon Memorial Cup with a 10-wicket win over Bledlow Ridge 2nd in the final at Fringford last year, have been elevated to the competition for Tier 5 teams after being crowned Division 6A champions in 2023.
Skipper Craig Wharton and Tom Smith hit unbeaten half-centuries to steer Horspath past Ridge's 131-8 last August after Azlan Sharif took 4-33.
Twelve sides will take part in the Telegraph Cup, with Risinghurst having triumphed last year with an 8-run win over Banbury 4th.
