Du Toit is Horspath 2nd's hero in thrilling win
05 Sep 2023
TAILENDER Erasmus Du Toit was Horspath 2nd's hero as they brought the curtain down on their Cherwell League Division 1 season with a thrilling three-wicket win at ninth-placed Tiddington.
Having bowled the hosts out for 150 after putting them in to bat on a slow-paced pitch, Horspath were up against it at 100-7 when Du Toit joined Jack Hussey at the crease.
But then the opening bowler proceeded to hammer an unbeaten 32 off 33 balls as the pair put on 53 for the eighth wicket to see the visitors home at 153-7 with seven balls to spare.
His superb knock was a league best and included four fours and two sixes, while Hussey (13no) provided excellent support.
Horspath, missing leading runscorer Christopher Hofen (462) through injury, had started sluggishly, slumping to 9-3 with Ryan Chapman (2-20) doing early damage.
But skipper Joey Todd dug in with a patient 45 to keep their hopes alive as spinners Nick Pykett and Bradley Rose each picked up 1-21 off 10 overs, before Du Toit took centre stage.
Earlier, Ed Oakley had starred in his second spell with the ball for Horspath, taking 4-37 in Tiddington's innings to end the season as the side's leading wicket-taker with 26 victims.
Openers Isaac Cottrell (33) and Jacob Davis (21) shared an opening stand of 51 before Hayden Moon struck twice to return fine figures of 2-22 from his 10 overs on his top-flight debut.
Horspath's bowlers then gradually worked their way through the Tiddington order with Hussaan Ahmed (2-37), Josh Richardson (1-19) and Du Toit (1-31) also picking up wickets.
The win sees Horspath finish in third place.
