Turner stars as Horspath claim Oxon U19 crown

22 Aug 2023

OPENER Charlie Turner smashed a whirlwind 68 off 27 balls as Horspath were crowned Oxfordshire Under 19 Cup champions with a brilliant five-wicket win over Banbury in the final at the Recreation Ground.
Chasing Banbury's 147-8 off 20 overs after they were put in to bat, Turner plundered six fours and five sixes in his stunning knock much to the delight of the home supporters.
It set Horspath well on the way to lifting the Honey-'B' Trophy, named in memory of their former player Morris Honey, with victory secured at 149-5 with 6.1 overs to spare.
Turner unleashed an array of lusty blows as he raced to a half-century, which he completed in just the sixth over with a single down to wide long on by the nets.
Playing the leading role in a second-wicket stand of 70 with Rayaan Dogar (20), Turner's terrific innings put Horspath in a commanding position before he was caught at deep mid-wicket by Banbury skipper Ali Short off Freddie Crook two overs later, making it 99-2.
His dismissal was immediately followed by a five-minute break for rain, but after play resumed Josh Richardson made a quick-fire 25 from 17 deliveries, before Saif Dogar eased Horspath home with an unbeaten 20 off 14 balls.
Turner was completing a devastating all-round display after striking with the first delivery of Banbury's innings. Short, who had made an unbeaten 89 in his side's semi-final win over holders Cumnor earlier in the day, cut the ball into Christopher Hofen's hands at backward point, sparking wild scenes of celebration.
But Tom Finlay and Murray Scott then kept Horspath at bay with an excellent stand of 105 for the second wicket.
Finlay was the more fluent of the pair, reaching his fifty with a sweep for two at the start of the 13th over, before leg-spinner Josh Richardson returned to the attack to peg Banbury back.
He removed the duo within the space of three balls, accepting a simple caught and bowled chance from Scott (27) and then trapping Finlay lbw for 62 off 43 balls, which included sevens fours and a six, as he attempted a reverse sweep.
Richardson repeated the feat in his last over with George Crawford stumping both Dan Redpath and Dan Shevket as Banbury slumped to 118-5.
Crawford completed a hat-trick of stumpings to remove Crook off Luke Heritage, before Turner came back to end Will Marland's breezy knock of 21 with Richardson taking the catch at mid-on.
A run out rounded off the dismissals with Richardson finishing with 4-28, while Turner (2-27) and Heritage (1-17) were the other wicket-takers.
Turner was named man of the match, while his brother and captain, Alfie, received the Honey-'B' Trophy with members of Morris Honey's family on hand to make the presentations.
Runners-up to Cumnor for the last two years, it was Horspath's first success in the competition since the 2020 final, which was delayed until 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Horspath had been even more dominant in the semi-finals, coasting to a seven-wicket win over Cropredy, who were restricted to 101-6 after choosing to bat.
Joe Gibbs (2-15), Charlie Turner (1-16) and Heritage (1-29) were the wicket-takers, while Joval Calix conceded just 12 runs from his four overs as opener Fergus Lynch (32) top-scored.
Hofen (34) and Charlie Turner (23) then set Horspath on the way to victory at 107-3 with 7.5 overs in hand.
Banbury, meanwhile, ended Cumnor's two-year reign, also with a seven-wicket win.
Faced with the holders' 138-7 after putting them in to bat, Short smashed 89 not out off 52 balls with nine fours and six sixes to power Banbury to 139-3 off 15.4 overs. He saw his side home with Marland, who was unbeaten on 25.
Miller (3-14) had shone with the ball in Cumnor's innings, which was built on skipper Will Laird's 36 at the top of the order. Final highlights below.
