Agony for Horspath 2nd in last-over drama
12 Jun 2023
HORSPATH 2nd lost their last two wickets off the last two balls to slump to an agonising 69-run defeat at home to Banbury 2nd in a remarkable finish to their Cherwell League Division 1 game.
Facing the reigning champions' 244-9 after they had chosen to bat, the home side looked to have done enough to secure a draw as the game came to its conclusion.
However, Brad Taylor (2-33) had other ideas and struck with the final two deliveries of the match to send Horspath crashing to 175 all out.
Young opener Christopher Hofen (34) top-scored, and there was no hint of the drama to come as Muhammad Ahmad (26) and Robbie Eason (22) put on 51 for the fourth wicket.
But then five wickets fell for 26 runs to leave Horspath in trouble at 139-8.
Joval Calix led the tail-end rearguard action only to be left stranded unbeaten on 28. Ian Bryan took 3-26 for Banbury, while Noble Sebastian picked up 2-37.
Opener Sebastian had earlier laid the foundations for Banbury's total with 51 off 97 balls, which included seven fours.
Will Briggs (44) and Justin Lambden (30) provided the innings with impetus as Muhammad Ahmad (3-50), Tyrone Eyles (3-52) and Ed Oakley (3-65) shared the wickets.
