England legend Gooch is a Horspath hit

12 Jun 2023

HORSPATH were delighted to welcome England legend Graham Gooch to the club on Friday.
The ex-England and Essex captain entertained around 90 members and guests in the Village Hall with an amusing 45-minute speech.
Taking inspiration from his glittering career, Gooch related tales involving his former teammates including Geoffrey Boycott, Mike Gatting and Phil Tufnell.
He also reflected on the opponents he came up against such as West Indies great Sir Viv Richards when the Caribbean kings dominated the Test scene.
Now 69, Gooch played 118 Tests, hitting 20 centuries including most memorably 333 against India at Lord's in 1990 - an innings witnessed by several current Horspath members.
That career-best score - added to his second innings 123 - remains the highest match aggregate at the 'Home of Cricket'.
Those tons contributed to a massive 44,846 first-class runs in a 27-year career before he retired into coaching and also became an England team selector as well as doing TV and radio commentary.
Gooch was joined at the club by comedian Johnny Tait, while those present were also treated to lamb and chicken curries cooked by chef supreme Hayden Moon.
Thanks also go to Stuart Bishop and Will Eason for organising the evening.
