Phillips and Ruff hit half-centuries
01 May 2023
JIMMY Phillips and Elliot Ruff hit half-centuries as Horspath completed their pre-season build-up with a 174-run win over Cookham Dean in a friendly at the Recreation Ground.
Opener Phillips made 85 off 136 balls with eight fours and a six to set the hosts on the way to 268-9 off 49 overs.
Ruff provided the firepower in the middle order with 56 from 54 deliveries, which included four boundaries and four sixes.
Newcomers Hussaan Ahmad (21) and Touseef Ahmad (20) both showed promise with fluent cameos. Wasim Ahmed (4-48) was the pick of the visitors' attack.
Cookham never recovered from losing early wickets to Subhan Javaid (3-20) and skipper Will Eason as they were bowled out for 94.
Javaid's haul included top scorer Greg Davis (25), while off-spinner Amin Rafiq chipped in with 2-15 before Jehan Mohammed (3-14) mopped up the tail.
Now Horspath can look forward to their opening Home Counties Premier League Division 2 game at home to Amersham on Saturday, before hosting Shipton-under-Wychwood in the Voneus Village Cup second round on Sunday.
The 2nd XI, whose friendly against Oxford University Authentics was called off due to a wet ground, start their Cherwell League Division 1 campaign at Westbury.
The 3rd XI are away to Bledlow Ridge in Division 3A, while the 4th XI entertain Bledlow Ridge 2nd in Division 6A.
