Cummings stars with 7-14 in Village Cup win
24 Apr 2023
TEENAGER Josh Cummings produced a superb spell of 7-14 to set Horspath on the way to an eight-wicket win at the Baldons in the Voneus Village Cup first round.
Taking advantage of seamer-friendly conditions, the 19-year-old blew away the hosts' top order with the first five wickets as they were shot out for 52 after electing to bat.
Off-spinner Amin Rafiq (3-26) got in on the act, before Cummings, whose eight overs also contained three maidens, claimed two more victims with the innings wrapped up off 18.3 overs.
Horspath then raced to victory at 55-2 off 7.5 overs with Dougal Main hammering an unbeaten 27.
Horspath are now at home to Shipton-under-Wychwood, who were handed a walkover by Steeple Aston, in round two on May 7.
Meanwhile, Horspath slipped to a 67-run defeat at home to local rivals Oxford in their opening pre-season friendly.
The visitors posted 267 from their 45 overs, before Horspath were bowled out for 200 with opener Jimmy Phillips making 49.
Sameer Hashimi returned impressive figures of 4-2 as Horspath 2nd beat Oxford 2nd by two wickets in a low-scoring friendly at the Oxford University Press Sports Ground.
Hashimi's haul helped reduce Oxford to 13-6 after the hosts had been put in to bat.
Captain Arthur Muir (42) rallied the home side, but with Sam Murphy taking 3-15, Oxford were bowled out for 87 off 30 overs.
Horspath slumped to 15-3 in reply with Ben Sharp (3-20) doing the early damage, before eventually getting over the line at 88-8. Opener Christopher Hofen (21) top-scored.
