Horspath out to regain Oxon Under 19 crown

06 Sep 2022

HORSPATH will bid to regain the Honey-'B' Trophy when they host the Oxfordshire Under 19 Cup Finals Day at the Recreation Ground on Sunday.
The club, who face Minster Lovell in the semi-finals while Banbury take on holders Cumnor, enjoyed the shortest reign in the competition's history 12 months ago.
With the much-delayed 2020 final held over to last year due to the coronavirus pandemic before being washed out in July, Horspath were crowned champions in September with a dramatic one-wicket win over holders Aston Rowant in a last-ball thriller.
However, the joy of lifting the trophy named in memory of the late Horspath player Morris Honey turned to disappointment just two weeks later when the side fell to a three-run defeat against Cumnor in a nail-biting 2021 final.
Horspath will go into this year's Finals Day full of confidence following an impressive campaign which saw them top Pool 2 after winning five of the seven fixtures they played and receiving walkovers in the other two.
Their victories saw them avenge the final defeat by Cumnor, who finished group runners-up, as well as beating Aston Rowant, Kidlington, Oxford and Abingdon Vale.
Skipper Luke Heritage is the competition's leading wicket-taker this season with 10 victims, while opening batsman Tejas Anand boasts an average of 72.
Minster Lovell finished runners-up to unbeaten Banbury in Pool 1, winning three of their seven fixtures while receiving three walkovers and suffering one defeat.
They are led by opener James Mattinson, who smashed 125 off 65 balls in a two-run win at Shipton-under-Wychwood.
The semi-finals start at 10.30 followed by the final in the afternoon.
